The N (The Network for Teens, formerly The Nighttime Network for Teens, Nighttime on Noggin) was the original name for what is now called TeenNick, a 24-hour television channel in the United States aimed at teenagers and young adults.

History

When the channel originally debuted on April 1, 2002, The N ran from 6:00PM–6:00AM Eastern/5:00PM–5:00AM Central, sharing time on the same channel with Noggin, which had started as a service of Viacom and the Children's Television Workshop as a mix of a channel meant to show CTW and Nick Jr.'s archived programming.

By 2002 however as Viacom showcased its own programming and made clear that they wanted Nick Jr. to compete with longtime CTW partner PBS Kids, CTW, by then known as Sesame Workshop, decided to reduce their interest in the network due to several factors, including the network's primetime ratings with "retro programming" to appeal to both baby boomers and young children not being as high as Viacom or Sesame Workshop expected them to be. With this move, MTV Networks was free to launch the concept of The N.

In October 2006, Viacom bought the quiz website Quizilla.[1] It then became a part of The N "network."

In August 2007, MTV Networks announced the discontinuation of The N's sister network Nickelodeon Games and Sports for Kids, which had removed all their original programming and become an automated loop of only a few of Nickelodeon's lower-profile archived game shows. MTV Networks decided to retain the satellite space and split Noggin and The N into two separate channels on December 31, 2007, with The N taking the place of Nick GAS.[2]

Shows

Such shows like Degrassi: The Next Generation which is a popular television series in Canada, broadcasted first by CTV will be returning after the transition to the new TeenNick. Degrassi: The Next Generation is about a group of teens that are faced with real life challenges such as self image, peer pressure, child abuse, sexual identity, gang violence, self-injury, school shootings, teenage pregnancy, and drug abuse.

New name

On February 24, 2009, it was announced that TeenNick would be taking over The N as the 24/7 channel. The N closed on September 28 at 6am with Sabrina, The Teenage Witch as the last program and changed to the TeenNick branding automatically. In an attempt to extend the association of the Nickelodeon brand to two sister channels, Viacom soon announced on the same month that in September, Nickelodeon would intend to change the name of one channel, Noggin, which was aimed at children, to Nick Jr., and that another, The N, would henceforth be known as TeenNick.[3]

Development

Longtime Nickelodeon personality Nick Cannon (declared in publicity materials as the "Chairman of TeenNick") has a presence on the network, as well as new programming exclusive to the network in late 2009 and early 2010. TeenNick's afterschool to primetime blocks have been divided into two distinct blocks;

  • 3pm-9pm ET - Programming meant for early to mid teenage audiences (13-15), mainly older originals from The N era, and acquired sitcoms and other teen dramas.
  • 9pm-12am ET - Programming meant for older teen and young adult audiences (16 and up), including new episodes of TeenNick programming and acquired programming.
