The New Mexicans are a rock duo from Dracut, Massachusetts, United States. They have been hailed as the saviors of modern rock by obscure critics. They planned on making an album by the summer of 2006 at Chuckfest. The band consists of Kyle Camire and George Hunt (who has a famous side project known as The Zons). The New Mexicans have many cult hits, such as Sousa and Big Mistake. They have played many memorable shows including Chuck Kuenzler's Chuckfest, The Pig and Apple Festival, The Dracut High School Telethon, and the Lin Garden Hurricane Relief Concert.
There was also a band called The New Mexicans from Washington. They broke up, however.
Their songwriting style has been compared to early 2000's indie rock bands such as The Strokes, The Shins, and The White Stripes, along with classic rock groups such as The Beatles and David Bowie. Kyle Camire, the band's lead songwriter, has compared his songwriting to the songwriting style of Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong. When the band first formed, Camire and Hunt would record demoed ideas online, and send them back and forth to each other through AOL Instant Messenger, expanding upon each other's ideas. These became known as the "AIM Sessions" in years to come.
In December of 2003, the band gave out a Christmas EP to their classmates, which featured their new song "Christmas Time" and their already popular single "Sousa" as the b-side.
As of 2009, the band is still somewhat functional, with the occational get together and recording session. Rumored jam sessions with Chuck Kuenzler (Of 2006's Chuckfest) have been reported, and a leaked demo of Miley Cyrus's hit song "See You Again" have appeared on the internet. Newer material such as "Sixty" has appeared on their myspace page. George Hunt has been very active in songwriting, with numerous demos appearing on his myspace page, including "Minty Demo." Kyle Camire has been keeping more low key, perhaps writing new material in secret. As of December 2008, a cover of T-Pain's "Buy You a Drink" appeared on his myspace.
Despite never completing a full album, the band is still considered one of the most influential bands to come out of Dracut's music scene.
