The New York Amsterdam News is a weekly newspaper geared for the African-American community of New York City. It was founded on December 4, 1909 by James Henry Anderson in Harlem, New York. At its height in the 1940s it had a circulation of 100,000 and was one of the four largest African-American newspapers in the United States. It has published columns by such notables as W. E. B. Du Bois, Roy Wilkins, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. and Malcolm X.
In 1979 the paper changed from broadsheet to tabloid format.
The current editor and publisher is Elinor Tatum, daughter of Wilbert "Bill" Tatum.
