Biography

The brash indie rock sounds of the Ordinary Boys come from Sam Preston (vocals, guitar), William J. Brown (guitar, vocals), Charles Stanley (drums), and James Gregory (bass). Inspired by the Kinks, the Jam, and the Smiths, the foursome formed the Ordinary Boys in Worthing, England, near Brighton, in spring 2002. They'd already been playing in various bands since their early teenage years, and obviously took their name from the Morrissey song; however, the Ordinary Boys attempted to survive the responsibilities of having normal nine-to-five lives before ever pursuing a career in music. By the time they reached their early twenties, the four childhood mates wooed their native England with their swaggering post-punk/pop style of music. Dates supporting stellastarr* and the Thrills as well an appearance on the BBC Radio 1 show Live in Brighton positioned the Ordinary Boys to gain national attention. Their debut single, Maybe Someday, arrived on B-Unique in February 2004; it also marked the band's debut with legendary producer Stephen Street. The cheeky second single, Week in Week Out, followed two months later. It was the band's first chart hit, going Top 40 in the U.K. Performances at T in the Park in Glasgow and Glastonbury in Reading coincided with the August 2004 release of the Ordinary Boys' debut album, Over the Counter Culture. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

The Ordinary Boys were an English indie rock band from Worthing, originally named Next in Line. They were influenced by mod revival and Britpop music, as well as the bands Madness, The Specials, The Kinks and The Smiths.[1] Their name derives from a Morrissey song, "The Ordinary Boys".[1]

Despite their limited success on the UK charts, their popularity grew, particularly due to media coverage that the lead singer, Samuel Preston, received when participating in Celebrity Big Brother UK in January 2006. Following that appearance, sales of the band's albums increased and the "Boys Will Be Boys" single moved from #33 to #3 in four weeks. Fans of the band were nicknamed "The Ordinary Army".

Their most high-profile single release was "Boys Will Be Boys" - which was re-released after Preston's appearance on Celebrity Big Brother. Notable songs include "Maybe Someday", "Talk Talk Talk", and "Seaside" from their debut album; "Boys Will Be Boys" from their second album; and "Over the Counter Culture", which was featured in the soundtrack for Burnout 3: Takedown. Their single "Lonely at the Top" marked a change of sound, with more of a pop feel to it; featuring synthesisers and samples.

Yahoo! UK revealed that The Ordinary Boys was the fourth most searched for keyword of 2006 in their annual top ten search results.[2]

The song "Boys Will Be Boys" featured in the fifth Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The band was also referenced in episode five ("Smoke and Mirrors") of series two of The IT Crowd.

In early 2008, lead singer Preston confirmed the band's end through the official Ordinary Boys website, and announced he is currently in the process of writing new material for a solo album.
