the Oxyrhynchus historian
Oxyrhynchus historian, the, Greek historian, unknown by name, fragments of whose work were discovered at Oxyrhynchus in 1906 on papyri containing about 900 lines of prose. These covered in detail and in a style commanding considerable respect events in the Greek world from 396 to 395 BC. The close agreement between Diodorus Siculus and the Oxyrhynchus historian, where the two can be compared, shows that the latter was used by Diodorus' source Ephorus himself. This fact has led to the realization that Diodorus is a more reliable source at this point than had hitherto been thought.
