Dictionary of Dance: The Path of Thunder

Ballet in three acts with choreography by Konstantin Sergeyev, libretto by Slonimsky, music by Kara Karayev, and designs by V. Dorer. Premiered 31 Dec. 1957 by the Kirov Ballet in St Petersburg with Sergeyev and Dudinskaya. It was inspired by a novel by the S. African writer Peter Abrahams. The Ballet tells the tale of a forbidden love affair between a black teacher and a white girl. The two are trapped in the Veldt and killed by her landowner father. It was revived for the Bolshoi Ballet in 1959. Many other versions have been staged throughout the Soviet Union.
