Review
Pleasant, middle-of-the-road music is very popular in the Philippines, and not many bands do it better or have done it longer than local group Side A, one of the country's best-selling outfits. The band recorded for an independent label in the 1980s and early '90s before moving in the mid-'90s to then newly established major label Warner Music Philippines. The Platinum Collection (2001) gathers 17 of Side A's most popular recordings for the label. While easy listening music can often become maudlin, the songs on The Platinum Collection are enjoyable, worthwhile outings. The tender and penetrating "Ang Aking Awitin" (My Song), for example, is an excellent example of quality song craftsmanship. "If Only" contains a strong, contagious melody, while the remake of Freddie Aguilar's esteemed "Anak" (Child) is both respectful and daring. "All This Time," a duet with local female singer Sharon Cuneta, also has fine moments, as does the remake of Steve Perry's "Foolish Heart," recorded live in concert for this album. ~ David Gonzales, All Music Guide
