The Professor
Professor, The (1881), a play by William Gillette. [ Madison Square Theatre, 151 perf.] Professor Hopkins (Gillette) is a handsome but unworldly pedant who finds himself pursued by a bevy of young girls, a pursuit which infuriates the Yale students who have been courting the girls. He must also confront a kidnapper and the girl he kidnapped, and a long‐lost brother and sister. Called “a character study” by the author, the play was accepted by the public for what it was—a lighthearted summer comedy.
