Game Description

Loosely based on the animated series that aired from 1986 to 1991, The Real Ghostbusters has you guiding Peter Venkman through 51 levels taking place within an ancient mansion. Instead of directly capturing ghosts, however, Venkman's task is merely to find a key leading to each level's exit. This is accomplished by collecting a specific number of stars hidden throughout each area. To reach the stars, you'll need to break blocks, climb ladders, crouch through tight spaces, and solve puzzles. Enemies are also present on each stage and cannot be defeated, so you'll have to dodge their advances by leaping over them. A password system allows you to resume progress at the beginning of each level.

Roots & Influences

The Real Ghostbusters is a reprogrammed version Kemco's Garfield Labyrinth with Peter Venkman replacing Garfield as the main character.

The Real Ghostbusters, known in Europe as Garfield Labyrinth and in Japan as Mickey Mouse IV: Mahou no Labyrinth (ミッキーマウスIV 魔法のラビリンス lit. "Mickey Mouse IV: The Magical Labyrinth"?) is a 1992/1993 action/puzzle video game developed and published by Kemco. The North American version is based on the animated series The Real Ghostbusters, the European version is based on Jim Davis's Garfield comic strips and the animated series Garfield and Friends, and the Japanese version is based on Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse, which is part of Kemco's series of Mickey Mouse video games.

Game play

Depending on which version is played, the player plays as Peter Venkman/Garfield/Mickey Mouse. It emphasized puzzle-solving in a dungeon-like atmosphere. To advance to each new stage, the player had to collect stars, which would open the door to the next level. The proton gun was effective only on blocks at the character's feet, not on the ghosts (bombs were used to destroy the ghosts). If the player lost all his health (by touching damaging things like ghosts, flames, and reforming blocks), or the 999 second timer wound down to zero, the player would lose a life. After successful completion of a level, the player would be rewarded with a 4-digit password, which would enable them to start at the end of that level next time they played (the game had no save feature).
