Biography

Boston-based death metal/grindcore outfit the Red Chord combine a crushing rhythmic assault and guitar patterns that bite like a circular saw with the menacing but intelligent lyrics and furious vocals of frontman Guy Kozowyk. Formed in 1999, the band earned a reputation on the New England metal scene for their uncompromising sound and style and they were offered a one-off album deal with the independent label Robotic Activities. 2002's Fused Together in Revolving Doors was recorded in a mere three days, but the results were strong enough to win them many new fans, and the band was able to spend more time on their second album, 2005's Clients. Clients was a concept album inspired by Kozowyk's day job working at a pharmacy, where a number of disturbed and eccentric individuals would come in regularly to refill prescriptions, with each song telling the story of a different "client." Originally released through Black Markey Activities, the well-respected metal label run by Kozowyk and former bassist Adam Wentworth, Clients was later reissued through Metal Blade Records, who signed the group to a record deal (and arranged to distribute some of BMA's releases). The Red Chord toured with High on Fire, Hatebreed, GWAR, Between the Buried and Me, and Every Time I Die, and were part of the lineup for the 2006 edition of Ozzfest. Before the Red Chord could return to the studio to record their third album, guitarist Johnny Fay left the group to devote more time to his burgeoning career as a recording engineer. With the new lineup in place of Kozowyk on vocals, Mike "Gunface" McKenzie and Mike Keller on guitars, Greg Weeks on bass, and Brad Fickeisen on drums, the Red Chord set out on tour in anticipation of the release of Prey for Eyes on July 24, 2007. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

History

The Red Chord was formed in Revere, Massachusetts in 1999 by vocalist Guy Kozowyk and guitarist Kevin Rampelberg. One year later, the band was joined by second guitarist Mike "Gunface" McKenzie, bassist Adam Wentworth and drummer Mike Justian.[2] The band's name is derived from Alban Berg's opera Wozzeck, "in which a schizophrenic man slits his lover's throat, then reverts to his normal self and asks, "My love, what is that red cord across your neck?"."[3] The debut album Fused Together in Revolving Doors was recorded with producer Andrew Schneider in December 2001 and released by Robotic Empire record label.[2] With the debut album, The Red Chord gained a substantial fanbase.[4]

In early 2004, Wentworth and Justian announced their withdrawal from The Red Chord and the band found replacements in bassist Gregory Weeks and drummer Jon Dow. In April that year, The Red Chord toured with Six Feet Under and others. The debut album was re-released with demo tracks, a full concert performance and the video clip for "Dreaming In Dog Years". In March, the band signed to Metal Blade. John Longstreth replaced Dow in May but exited in September. The Red Chord entered Planet Z Studios in Hadley, Massachusetts on November 1 with Brad Fickeisen as a new drummer and recorded their second album Clients,[2][4] which subsequently sold over 50,000 copies in the US.[5]

2005 started with American tours and resumed on European tours in December. The band filmed a promotional video for the track "Antman" with director Dave Brodsky. The tour continued in North America through February 2006 until Ozzfest in June.[2][4] In February 2007, guitarist Jonny Fay decided to quit the band[6] and was replaced by Mike Keller. In May 2007, the band went on another tour to Europe. The third album, Prey for Eyes, was released on July 24.[2][4] The group parted ways with guitarist Mike Keller in early September and decided not to replace him.[2]

The band's fourth album, Fed Through The Teeth Machine, was recorded in early to mid-2009 at Backyard Studios in Milford, New Hampshire, which is owned by the band's former guitarist Jonny Fay.[7] The album was released on October 27, 2009.[8] Kozowyk says the new songs are more intense and mature than those the previous album. "It's faster and heavier, but it's definitely groove-oriented and melodic where it needs to be," he commented.[9] Fed Through the Teeth Machine sold around 3,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release and debuted at No. 180 on the Billboard 200 chart.[10]

Musical style

The Red Chord's "grindcore style of death metal"[4][11][12] or "death/grind"[13] incorporates also elements of metalcore and hardcore punk[11][12][13] and is typically experimental.[13] The band helped popularise the "deathcore" genre.[1][14] The Red Chord typically uses frequent tempo changes,[11] technically proficient instrumental approach[13] and emphasizes the element of groove in their music.[15][16] The vocal style of Kozowyk combines death metal's guttural growl with metalcore-style screaming,[11] uses occasional spoken word[16] and is rather decipherable.[12] As a vocal influence, Kozowyk points out Frank Mullen from Suffocation; Black Sabbath as one of his musical influences[5] and Faith No More as a lyrical inspiration.[14] PopMatters states that "The Red Chord has become renowned for its sense of humor" exemplified by the video "Stache Attack".[14]
