Plot

The Office star Rainn Wilson portrays a drummer named "Fish," who gets a second shot at fame 20 years after getting kicked out of his band on the very night they signed the record contract that made them stars. Fish has spent the past two decades languishing at soul-crushing day jobs while his old bandmates became legends, continuing to grace magazine covers and dominate the radio. He might just get another chance at musical success, however, when his teenage cousin invites him to drum for his high school garage band, and they end up catching the ear of record executives. Now, Fish is determined to live the hedonistic rock & roll lifestyle he missed out on 20 years ago, but his new bandmates don't appreciate his hard partying -- and neither do his middle-aged knees. This Fox Atomic comedy co-stars Christina Applegate. Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and Tom McNulty co-produced the feature, which was penned by Wallace Wolodarsky and Maya Forbes, and directed by Peter Cattaneo (Opal Dream). ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Review

There's a high probability that studios keep piles of generic comedy scripts like The Rocker sitting around in the vaults. They probably lie in stacks, divided up based on type, each pile with a Post-it note on top baring a hopeful casting suggestion; the stickie on the Sports Comedies says "Will Ferrell," the note on the Cringe Comedies says "Ben Stiller," and while the one on the Rock Comedies probably says "Jack Black," fortunately for us in this hypothetical scenario, Mr. Black's agent noticed a tad too much similarity between The Rocker and Black's 2003 hit School of Rock, so this film was handed down to Office vet Rainn Wilson -- who turns this fun, simple story into something fresh.

That isn't to say that the uncomplicated plot doesn't remain totally uncomplicated (or at least vaguely similar to School of Rock), it just works well that way. Wilson plays "Fish," a drummer booted from his '80s hair-metal band Vesuvius on the verge of their big break. He henceforth plows straight through to middle age on a 20-year diet of crappy day jobs, until he gets an unlikely second chance at stardom by joining his teenage cousin's high-school band ADD -- which lands a record deal based on a viral video of Fish rehearsing naked. What ensues is a basic fish-out-of-water story (no pun intended) built around a super-bombastic lead, but unlike many of Hollywood's other Post-it-worthy comedians, Wilson hasn't worked this schtick into the ground. On the contrary, his only ubiquitous character is the righteous and nerdy Dwight from the hit series The Office, and Fish is just about Dwight's complete opposite -- dressing up in red leather pants and partying until his fourtysomething knees give out. Wilson's take on the classic Terrifyingly Enthusiastic character type that so many comedians have made their careers on is endlessly endearing, and even his young co-stars pull off their pubescent, sometimes-whiney roles (almost) without ever crossing the line into grating angst.

In fact, the movie is full of cheesy "just be yourself" moments where the kids briefly learn a lesson about kissing or self-esteem or whatever, but the sappy stuff never takes a front seat to the hilarious and often-insane humor. That's what you get when it's become the standard for all available members of the SNL/30 Rock/Apatow in-crowds to show up and play all the minor roles in a comedy starring anyone vaguely connected to their clique. Jason Sudeikis is particularly awesome in this regard, playing the band's sleazy manager, though Will Arnett turns in an equally memorable performance as the spandexed, eyelinered frontman for Fish's old hair-metal band -- this is probably the role he was born to play.

Of course, even with all it has going for it, the movie still has its flaws. It isn't exactly edited perfectly, and the story plays out a little clumsily as a result, leaving it smattered with events that don't end up going anywhere and subplots that don't end up panning out. But this isn't really the kind of movie where plot matters that much anyway. It's good for laughs, and it proves that Rainn Wilson can earn them -- in or out of the Office. ~ Cammila Albertson, All Movie Guide

Plot

During the mid-80's, Robert "Fish" Fishman (Rainn Wilson) was the drummer for Vesuvius, a local glam metal band from Cleveland, Ohio. After playing a local gig, Fish's bandmates are approached by their manager, who says that a label is interested in them but will not sign them unless they get rid of Fish for the nephew of the label's president as their new drummer. At first, the band refuses on account that it was Fish who started the band, but after their manager tells them that they will open for Whitesnake if they sign to the label, they fire Fish on the spot and leave him in the dust. Fish vows to start a band that was to be ten times bigger than Vesuvius. Twenty years later, after failing at another cubicle job, breaking up with his girlfriend, and having to move in with his sister, Fish finds himself living in the attic "looking" for work. When it looks like he'll be a loser for life, his dorky, socially awkward nephew Matt saves the day. Matt (Josh Gad) plays the keyboards in a pop rock band called A.D.D., joined by the dark, brooding Curtis (Teddy Geiger) and the no-nonsense Amelia (Emma Stone). The band is set to play at the prom when their drummer gets thrown out of school. So Matt suggests that they ask his uncle to play the drums for them.

The prom turns into a disaster, being Fish's first time on stage in twenty years, and his drum solo takes over the prom King and Queen's dance in a fit of rage, sweat, and sheer embarrassment for the band. Fish tries to make amends by trying to get the band a gig. Eventually, he manages to organize a booking in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The band decides to sneak out in Matt's mother's car, but are soon caught by the police after she reports her car stolen.

When Fish is kicked out of his sister's house and forced to live in the basement of his favorite Chinese take-out place, the band invents a new way to practice via four-way iChat. Because of the stuffy and hot atmosphere in Fish's new "apartment", he chooses to practice naked, which quickly makes its way onto YouTube . A million hits later, A.D.D. signs a contract with David Marshall (Jason Sudeikis), an agent whose obnoxiousness outshines his poseur personality. David takes them on tour.

The band wows audiences across the country, with everyone wanting to see the infamous "Naked Drummer." Fish starts taking his rockstar status too seriously and the whole band is eventually arrested after a late-night party.

Curtis's mother (Christina Applegate) promises to stay for the remainder of the tour, so her son won't be influenced by Fish. As the tour continues, Fish and Curtis's mother find that they have similar interests and begin to find an attraction to each other. A.D.D. also shoots a music video which upon watching, all the band members are featured prominently except Fish, who notices that his face is being obscured during the entire video. It's David who engineers this move behind Fish's back.

David informs the band that they're opening for Vesuvius in a free concert for their hometown of Cleveland, Ohio. Fish is enraged and the band sticks by his side and agrees not to do the show. During Fish's rage, Curtis's mother tries to calm Fish down and does so by kissing him, which David witnesses. He exaggerates the truth about Fish and Curtis' mother to Curtis, hoping to get Fish fired. During their next concert, Curtis announces to the crowd that the band will do the show after all, much to Fish's dismay. After they have a heated argument in front of the crowd, Fish quits the band, cuts his hair, and finds himself a miserable job with his brother-in-law in the corporate world.

Matt and Amelia convince Curtis that the band is nothing without the spirit of Fish after the label's newly appointed drummer doesn't fit in, and Curtis convinces Fish to do the gig. Upon arriving at the stadium before their performance, Fish encounters his former bandmates who have become pompous, vain and arrogant, with fake British accents and a new drummer named Sticks (Lonny Ross), who is actually from England. To his happiness, Fish finds that he is able to let the past go and wishes Vesuvius a great show. Fish and the band play an incredible show. Vesuvius takes the stage, and during their set the lead singer's microphone falls off the stand. While the singer searches for the lost microphone, the voice track still plays, exposing the singer's fraud for lip-syncing the entire time. The audience goes into a huge rage, booing Vesuvius off the stage in a cloud of embarrassment, and chanting an encore for ADD. the band takes the stage again and performs for the crowd despite the advice of David, whom they fire on the spot for his obvious treachery.

Promotion

To promote the movie, the song "Promised Land", as performed by the fictional band Vesuvius, was released as free downloadable content for the video game Rock Band, which is shown being played in the movie.

A viral marketing effort for the film was begun on August 11, when Rainn Wilson posted a message to the MySpace blog of Jenna Fischer, his co-star from The Office. According to his message,[2] he had "kidnapped the lovely Jenna, put her, bound, in the trunk of my firebird and logged onto her MySpace to send out this bulletin....To free America's sweetheart...you must attend my new movie, 'The Rocker', which opens August 20th....As soon as the film grosses 18.7 Mil, she will be released and given a peach smoothie." A subsequent blog entry pointed readers to http://freejennanow.com/, where videos were posted and features such as a "Free Jenna Game" and countdown tickers could be found.

'The Rocker: Live the dream' was a competition to promote the film via MySpace and Kerrang! magazine in the UK. Over 1200 bands entered original songs at www.myspace.com/therockeruk for a chance to win a photo shoot and interview with Kerrang! magazine, a trip to the MySpace Black Curtain Screening in London, Gibson musical equipment and an assortment of 20th Century Fox merchandise. 10 bands went through to the final judging and Scottish band Alburn were chosen by Kerrang! editor, Paul Brannigan, as the winner[3]. Alburn dressed and posed as characters from the film in the Kerrang! photoshoot. Rainn Wilson recorded a video message for the winning band, which was played at the MySpace Black Curtain Screening.

Critical reception

Based on 92 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, The Rocker had an overall approval rating of 36 percent, with a weighted average score of 5.1/10.[4] Entertainment Weekly gave it a C-, saying "the film ... shamelessly ... rips off School of Rock, recycling its flaky-educator loser-of-the-gods premise, only this time in high school".[5]

Box office

The Rocker was released on August 20, 2008 in the USA. It was disappointing at the box office, opening outside the Top 10 at #12 with $2.64 million for its first weekend, grossing less than $7 million overall during its entire theatrical run.[1] One of the stars of the film, Emma Stone, had another film (The House Bunny) open the same weekend. It fared much better than The Rocker, opening at #2.

Project history

Loosely based on an actual event in story creator Ryan Jaffe's real life.[citation needed] Jaffe plays roller hockey with a group of friends in Hollywood. During a game, one of the high school aged players mentioned his band needed a drummer. One of the adult players piped up and offered to play with the teen rockers and an idea was born. The story of how the drummer is kicked out of being in the biggest band in the world is taken from Pete Best, who suffered the same fate as the original drummer of The Beatles. Best himself makes a brief cameo role in the film.
