Plot

Eight years after getting a crash course in the fine art of personifying Christmas, Tim Allen returns as Kris Kringle's replacement in this sequel to the 1994 hit The Santa Clause. While Scott Calvin (Allen) initially had mixed feelings when he became the new Santa Claus, after eight years on the job he's come to enjoy being Father Christmas, and he and the Elves are looking forward to another holiday season when things begin going a bit wrong. Scott finds he's becoming less and less "Santa-like," and his son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) has become difficult enough to land on the official "Naughty" list. Scott discovers most of his problems stem from an obscure passage in his contract with the North Pole which decrees that he has to find a Mrs. Claus. Scott has little choice but to start dating, but he soon learns that when you're a big guy from the North Pole who lacks conventional employment, single women do not come running. In order to leave him more time to search for a wife, Scott and the Elves create a duplicate Santa to keep an eye on the shop; however, the "other" Santa turns out to be more Naughty than Nice, and in time Scott has to wrestle control of the North Pole away from his doppelganger. Wendy Crewson, Judge Reinhold, and David Krumholtz also reprise their roles from The Santa Clause. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

Review

Like most sequels -- especially those eight years in the making -- The Santa Clause 2 is bursting at the seams of its Santa suit with extra subplots and places for your eyes to look. Unlike most sequels, the latest Tim Allen holiday vehicle actually pulls it off. Surprisingly, what's new is every bit as effective as what returns. It could even be argued that the sequel's three most whimsical ingredients are all fresh: comically gifted child actor Spencer Breslin as an elf, Allen's own synthetic dictator of a doppelganger, and a reindeer that speaks in irresistible reindeer gibberish. If the above weren't enough, the team of screenwriters (there's almost one per character) finds room for fellow folklore icons like the Tooth Fairy and Mother Nature, and even introduces a frosty principal (Elizabeth Mitchell) for Allen's Scott Calvin to thaw. The whole concoction overwhelms a viewer's better notions that this is just a corporate, profit-driven enterprise. Although the screenwriters distribute screen time miraculously among the disparate components, left out in the cold is Eric Lloyd as Scott's son, reprising from the first movie -- which makes him a decidedly awkward age to write. That's why his "acting out" takes the form of spray-painting graffiti about the principal on school walls, which just never makes much sense for his character. Other than that, the script really does have it both ways -- pursuing equally interesting plot lines both at the North Pole, where Allen has a dandy time playing the robotic impostor, and back home. The Santa Clause 2 generates enough populist charm to appease all but the most cynical purists -- who were never its target audience in the first place. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide

Plot summary

Eight years have gone by since Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) first took up the Santa suit, and became subject to The Santa Clause. Now Santa is at the top of his game at the North Pole and could not be happier, at least until Bernard (David Krumholtz) and Curtis (Spencer Breslin), the Keeper of the Handbook of Christmas break the news; there is another clause-the "Mrs. Clause".

Santa/Scott is now pressed to get married before the next Christmas Eve, or the clause will be broken and Christmas will die away. At the same time, Abby the Elf delivers news that is more distressing; Santa's own son Charlie (Eric Lloyd) is on the naughty list. Scott must return to his home to search for a wife and set things right with Charlie. He even brings this up when visited by the Council of Legendary Figures consisting of Mother Nature (Aisha Tyler), Father Time (Peter Boyle), Cupid (Kevin Pollak), the Easter Bunny (Jay Thomas), the Tooth Fairy (Art LaFleur), and the Sandman (Michael Dorn).

To cover for Santa's prolonged absence, Curtis helps Santa create a life-size toy replica of Santa. However, this larger-than-life legalist cannot find any grace or slack in his plastic heart for minor infractions by children the world over, having followed the Handbook too strictly. Toy Santa takes control of the North Pole with a duplicated army of life-size toy soldiers. He thinks that everyone is naughty, and he plans to give the entire world lumps of coal.

Because of the impending end of his contract, Scott undergoes a "de-Santafication process" which gradually returns him to Scott Calvin. He has a limited amount of magic to help him. Scott attempts to reconcile with Charlie, who keeps vandalizing his school to get attention. He and Charlie both hit the cold, hard wall of the school's Principal Carol Newman (Elizabeth Mitchell).

Charlie confesses to Scott how hard it is for him that Scott is never around like other fathers, and reveals the stress he is under to conceal the secret that his father is Santa. Scott vows to try harder as a dad, and he and Charlie reconcile.

After a few failed dates, Scott finds himself falling for Carol. He accompanies her in a sleigh to their school faculty Christmas party, which turns out to be dull and boring. Using a little of his Christmas magic, Scott livens up the party by presenting everyone with their childhood dream gifts (much like he did for Neil and Laura in the first film). He makes a special presentation to Carol, and, with his last remnant of magic, wins her over. However, she balks when he attempts to explain he is Santa, believing that Scott is mocking her childhood, until Charlie manages to convince her by showing her his magic snow globe.

Curtis flies in to deliver the dreadful news about the Evil Toy Santa's coal binge. However, Scott has used up the last of his magic wooing Carol and Comet has eaten too many chocolate bars. With a little help from the Tooth Fairy, Santa and Curtis return to the North Pole. Toy Santa wastes no time in subduing Scott, but Charlie and a now-believing Carol spring him free by summoning the Tooth Fairy to fly them there. Scott goes after the Toy Santa, who has already left with the sleigh, riding Chet, a reindeer-in-training, and they both crash back into the village. With an army of elves, Bernard, Scott, Carol and Charlie lead a snowball war to overthrow the toy soldiers. Toy Santa is reduced to his normal six-inch height, Carol marries Scott in a ceremony presided over by Mother Nature herself, and Christmas proceeds as it always has. In addition, Charlie and Scott reveal the truth to Lucy, Charlie's little sister about Scott being Santa Claus so she is now in on the secret.

Trivia

Producer Brian Reilly said, "Santa has to find a way to deal with being a dad in a time of crisis for his son, and balance that with keeping the North Pole running for all the children of the world. He also has a meeting with other magical people."

When Scott is trying to stop Toy Santa from taking the sleigh, Toy Santa says, "You are a sad, strange little man." This is what Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) says to Sheriff Woody (Tom Hanks) in the movie Toy Story. Another Easter Egg in this movie is the Kim Possible poster in Lucy's bedroom.
