Review

The Veronicas sound like a marketer's dream: impossibly cute Australian twin sisters who sound as if Hilary Duff and Avril Lavigne formed a band. If image is everything, this duo has a look that rivals that of t.A.T.u., and it's far less sleazy, too. But good images don't necessarily make for good records, and that's the real surprise behind their debut album, The Secret Life Of...: it's a terrific little pop record. True, their bold, brightly colored pop may not be everybody's cup of tea, but for those who have found the teen pop of the mid-2000s to be a serious drag, The Secret Life Of... is an unexpected gift, a slick, tuneful set of pure sugarcoated fun. While the Veronicas don't exactly break from the post-Avril punky pop that's been the blueprint of teen pop from Ashlee Simpson to Good Charlotte, there's a greater sense of song and studio craft on their record, whether it's coming from veteran teen popster Max Martin (the man behind Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys) or the sisters themselves. And make no mistake, for as polished as this album is, the Veronicas come across as a genuine band, not a prefabricated pop novelty. Not only do Jess and Lisa Orgliasso have a hand in writing eight of the 12 songs on The Secret Life Of..., but there's a kinetic chemistry to their performances that gives this album both a center of gravity and a broader appeal: like Kelly Clarkson, they don't seem like cookie-cutter pop tarts, they seem real. Of course, they're packaged and presented as a creation, but that's why The Secret Life Of... is such a good record: it plays by the rules of punky teen pop, and by doing so, it reveals how dull and formulaic the rest of the genre is. Here, melody runs through both the verses and choruses, the hooks dig deeper, not just on the tracks helmed by Martin, but on the Orgliasso sisters' songs, too. The Veronicas are sassy and sexy, not trashy, and they show humor and heartbreak here, which helps elevate their debut to the top ranks of 2000s teen pop. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Album information

The first single to be released off the album, "4ever", received much radio play in Australia and America. It reached #2 on the ARIA Singles Chart, also reaching #20 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart and #90 on the U.S. Billboard Pop 100.

A special limited edition DVD was released with the US version. This edition included two extra songs and videos, and was only available online.

In September 2006, The Veronicas were nominated for 3 ARIA Awards for The Secret Life of..., including Best Pop Release, Highest Selling Album and Breakthrough Artist Album. On 29 October, at the ARIA Awards, The Secret Life of... won Best Pop Release. They lost Breakthrough Artist Album to Wolfmother and Highest Selling Album to Human Nature.

The album spent over a year in the ARIA Albums Chart, without leaving the top 40.

The song "Secret" is featured on Dance! Online, a multiplayer online casual rhythm game.

Despite the ellipsis, the album is sometimes mistakenly called "The Secret Life of The Veronicas".[6]

Critical reception

The album received mixed reviews. Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic stated "[...] it's a terrific little pop record [...] an unexpected gift, a slick, tuneful set of pure sugarcoated fun. Here, melody runs through both the verses and choruses, the hooks dig deeper, not just on the tracks helmed by Martin, but on the Orgliasso sisters' songs, too."[7] Laura Sinagra from Blender complimented their songs "4ever, which she said sounded like "[...] a remix of Kelly Clarkson’sSince U Been Gone”[...]" and "When It All Falls Apart" which has "[...] the marching, singalong wistfulness of great late-’80s arena pop." But she called the ballads "[...] copious [and] dull[...]" but complimented their cover of Tracy Bonham’s hit Mother Mother.[8] E! Online gave the album a C grade complementing "4ever" as "[...] an endearing pop take on the Donnas' slutty garage rock." But then said the album "[...] feels like it was designed by committee, with each track sounding like a second generation Xerox of the token girlie rocker hit on the last five Now! compilations[...]"[9] Christian Hoard from Rolling Stone Magazine said that "4ever" was the only exceptional song on the album while the rest of it "[...] is overrun with bland, airbrushed introspection like "Mother Mother" and "Nobody Wins."[10] Slant Magazine called the album "[...] so damned slick and irresistible[...] There's a punky sassiness to most of the album[...]"[11] Dan Raper of PopMatters compared their style of music to those of Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson. He complimented their songs "Revolution", "Leave Me Alone", "Mouth Shut" and "Heavily Broken" stating that "[...]half the songs on the record fall into this mould of attractively packaged, unremarkable pop." [12] Craig Mathieson of The Age gave positive reviews for "4ever" and "Revolution" but criticised the rest of the album.[13] The New York Times said the album had "Sugar-sharp songs with a hint of intrigue[...]", and Entertainment Weekly also complimented them stating "Guilty pleasure or not, these girls won't be a Secret for long."[14]
