The Snapper (1990) is a novel by Irish writer Roddy Doyle and the second novel in The Barrytown Trilogy.
Plot summary
The story tells of young Sharon Rabbitte being impregnanted by a friend's father. Sharon decides to keep the "snapper" (as the baby is called), and refuses to reveal the identity of the begetter. She soon becomes the talk of Barrytown, to the chagrin of her family.
Initially, Sharon's conservative, blue-collar father Jimmy Rabbitte Sr. is outraged. Gradually, he begins to change, and becomes a more modern, sensitive man.
Film adaptation
The story was made into a film of the same title in 1993. It was directed by Stephen Frears. It starred Tina Kellegher as Sharon and Colm Meaney as her befuddled father.
When Roddy Doyle sold the film rights to The Commitments, he also gave away rights to all characters who appeared in that film. Hence, when The Snapper was made into a movie, the Rabbitte family had to be renamed. Their new name in the film was Curley.
