Background

Flack became interested in Pekin ducks while writing Angus and the Ducks (1930). After learning the species originated in China, she wrote the book and asked Kurt Wiese to illustrate it because he had lived and worked in China. [2]

Plot summary

Ping, a domesticated duck who lives on a riverboat on the Yangtze River, forages daily along the river. To avoid being spanked for being the last duck to return to the boat, Ping hides and the boat leaves without him. He spends the next day searching for his family and happily returns when he finds them.

Film, TV or theatrical adaptations

A 10-minute animated film of the story was produced by Weston Woods Studios in 1955.[3]
