Biography

The Sugarettes hail from Eindhoven, Netherlands, where founding members Joep van Son and Iskaa (who doubles as lead singer for the Dutch outfit Foam) first combined their mutual love for sugary melodies, raw guitars, and D.I.Y. production. After spending several months fleshing out van Son's homemade demos, the duo added percussionist Marnix van den Broek and set to work on the lo-fi Sugarettecity EP. After its release in 2006, the Sugarettes mailed a copy of the EP to Belgium's Studio Brussel, hoping it would fare well in the radio station's demo contest. Instead, Sugarettecity's energetic "Clap Hands" wound its way onto the station's regular playlist, the happy result of the band forgetting to write "Demo Contest" on the envelope. Such good luck continued in 2007, with Cox Dieben climbing aboard as the band's bassist and Subroutine Records (an indie label based out of Groningen) signing the Sugarettes to its roster. The full-length Love & Other Perversities was issued that fall. ~ Andrew Leahey, All Music Guide
