Biography

Like fellow Murderecords bands Eric's Trip, Jale, and the Inbreds, the Super Friendz broke up before they reached success -- if success means big U.S. sales. The group was well-known and respected on Canada's East Coast, with each member writing and singing his own songs, but their many talents ultimately led to the band's demise.

Formed in 1993 by Matt Murphy (guitar), Charles Austin (bass), and Drew Yamada (guitar), the trio was influenced by Television, the Clash, the Kinks, Neil Young, the Beatles, and the Meat Puppets. They played the burgeoning Halifax rock-pop scene with a myriad of stand-in drummers, including Thrush Hermit's Cliff Gibb and Sloan's Chris Murphy (no relation, though they've influenced each other's music). The Super Friendz released their first EP, By Request, in 1993 on the then-local Murderecords label. The cassette-only Sticktoitiveness was released in 1994, and in late 1994 they recorded their full-length debut, Mock Up/Scale Down, in ten days. The album was produced by Brenndan McGuire (Jale, Thrush Hermit, Sloan) without a permanent drummer -- local percussionist Dave Marsh filled in. After Mock Up's release in 1995, Lonnie James signed on as the fourth member of the Super Friendz. The refreshingly pop album had solid reviews and sales, and was nominated for a Best Alternative Album Juno in 1996.

The band's second EP, Play the Game, Not Games, was released in 1996; the full-length gem Slide Show was issued in 1997, as was the U.S. release of Sticktoitiveness, which combined Mock Up and Play the Game. Like other Halifax groups, the bandmembers had many side projects, but soon the Super Friendz project itself was pushed aside. The group disbanded in September 1997, and the old Friendz worked on their other music activities full time. Matt Murphy formed the Flashing Lights, Austin opened his own recording studio and formed Neusiland, Yamada toured with Mike O'Neill (of the Inbreds) and played with Neusiland, and James formed Lonnie James and the High Five Band. Murphy and James later lived and played in Toronto, while Yamada and Austin stayed in Halifax. ~ Gina Boldman, All Music Guide

Origins

The Super Friendz were formed in 1994 by three King's College students. Matt Murphy, who had earlier played guitar with Black Pool; bassist Charles Austin, briefly a part of Al Tuck; and guitarist Drew Yamada formed the core of the band. At first the band had no permanent drummer: at various times during their early years Chris Murphy (no relation to Matt) of Sloan, Cliff Gibb of Thrush Hermit, and Dave Marsh filled the role.

In 1994, The Super Friendz released a single on Chris Murphy's label, Murderecords, and later toured Canada with Sloan.

Early years

The Super Friendz' first album, Mock Up, Scale Down (1995, Murderecords), drew great critical praise, if not necessarily commercial success. Recorded in producer Brenndan McGuire's house with Dave Marsh on drums, Mock Up blended retro-pop with Canadian rock influences.

The following year, the band released Play the Game, Not Games, a 10-inch single, also on Murderecords. The songs on Play the Game--especially the contributions of Austin and Yamada—were significantly more experimental than on the album, and prefigured both the band's future work and its creative tension.

Mock Up, Scale Down was released in the United States in 1997 on March Records under the title Sticktoitiveness (which earlier had been the title of an independent tape made by the band). A few of the songs from Play the Game also appeared on the U.S. release.

Later years and break-up

Continuing to tour, the band pulled together their last studio album, Slide Show. Featuring Lonnie James on drums, this album is often considered the band's strongest effort.

The band broke up in 1997 so that the members could focus on new projects.

Matt Murphy later re-emerged with a new band called The Flashing Lights. He also played with the band City Field and starred in the film The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terrifico. Charles Austin is a recording engineer and producer in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Drew Yamada later toured with Mike O'Neil and others, before leaving the music industry full time to pursue post-secondary education.

Reunion

In late December 2002, The Super Friendz came back together for a special holiday reunion. The band continued on to start recording their return effort, Love Energy, released Summer 2003. A small tour followed in September.

Currently The Super Friendz are recording their as of yet unnamed follow-up to 2003's Love Energy. Its status is unknown.
