The Times-News is a daily newspaper based in Burlington, North Carolina formed in 1931 by the merger Burlington Daily Times and The Burlington News.[1]
Founded: 1887. Joined Freedom Communications Inc. in 1978.
Circulation: Daily: 27,448; Sunday: 27,892.
Philosophy: Times-News is known for its commitment to community journalism and its development of young journalists. The paper partners with two universities in hosting as many as five interns per year. The paper's cornerstone is local news coverage.
Special features: The weekly Here & Now page, a national award winner, is written by high school students. Through its guest columnist program, the paper has had as many as 20 local columnists published per month. .The Times-News is also committed to a strong internet presence. The paper's Web Site contains a broad spectrum of local information, news, and community submitted content.
Awards: In addition to annual state press association awards, the Times-News is a Best of Freedom winner this year. The paper is frequently honored for its columns, editorials and graphics. We’ve also won awards in the NNA’s Better Newspaper Contest for general excellence, best sports section, photography and writing.
THE COMMUNITY
Location: Centrally located in North Carolina roughly 60 miles west of Raleigh, 25 miles west of Chapel Hill, 20 miles east of Greensboro and 90 miles east of Charlotte. In the past two years, areas west and south of the paper's core community have experienced a building boom.
Market: Burlington, once a farming and textiles community, now has as its largest employer a laboratory testing company. Burlington and Alamance County are increasingly becoming a bedroom community for the region.
Things to do: In Burlington, you’ll enjoy a wide variety of music and local and regional festivals. You’ll also have easy access to some of the most exciting athletics: two NASCAR venues within 100 miles, the Charlotte Hornets, the Carolina Panthers, the Carolina Hurricanes, minor-league baseball and some of the nation’s best collegiate basketball teams. Daily trips can be taken to the coast or the mountains.
Population: 138,000 in the county. The county is 18 percent black, and an estimated 10 percent Hispanic.
