Adventure Guide: The Town & Environs
Outside Paris: Chantilly: Sightseeing:

The small town of Chantilly has fervently resisted modern overdevelopment, preserving its 18th-century architecture and Haussmann-era mansions, many of which can be seen (from the outside, of course) along the Avenue du Maréchal Joffre and the Rue du Connétable. Many of these historic buildings are opened to the public during the annual Journées du Patrimoine (September).

The Princes of Condé carefully arranged their domain to be seen by visitors from a certain perspective at the Rond-point des Lions. So if you arrive from the train station or the main road from Paris, stop into the tourism office at the Avenue du Maréchal Joffre (for a map), and from the Rond-point de Sylvie, follow the Route de l’Aigle through the forest. The Hippodrome, Grandes Ecuries, and Château de Chantilly will suddenly appear on the left in all their glory.
