The Trail of Blood

The Trail of Blood is a pamphlet by Dr. James Milton Carroll, published posthumously, collecting a series of lectures given by Carroll over the history of Baptist churches. Over sixty editions have been published since the first in 1931, and as of October, 2000, 2,255,000 copies have been printed worldwide. The copyright to this text belongs to Ashland Avenue Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky.

In his pamphlet, Carroll tries to show that modern Baptists are the continuance of a strain of Christianity that dates back to apostolic times. As part of this attempt, Carroll claims a sort of descent by modern Baptists from such highly diverse and unrelated earlier groups as the Waldensians, the Cathari, the Paulicians, and the Donatists. This claim is in fact without any foundation, and the beliefs of modern Baptists and those of many of the groups named have little to do with each other.
