The Tsitsith
An article of Jewish religious apparel, the fringe or tassels attached to the outer garment, which are believed to be endowed with talismanic properties. In modern times, the fringe has survived in the praying shawl named talith and in a garment worn on the chest. A sentence in the Talmud states: "Whoever has the tephillin bound to his head and arm, and the tsitsith thrown over his garments … is protected from sin."
