The Underminer is a fictional villain in Pixar's animated movie The Incredibles, who has the appearance and traits of a sort of human mole. His appearance at the end of The Incredibles created a cliffhanger ending. He has since appeared in The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer video game.
In the film and the game, he is voiced by John Ratzenberger, a regular contributor to Pixar movies, having been in every Pixar film to date. It is a minor role for Ratzenberger, and his first villainous part. Brad Bird mentions on the DVD of The Incredibles that he was initially uncomfortable with the idea of re-casting Ratzenberger and expected for a while simply to ignore tradition and not cast him, but ultimately decided to give him the very last part in the movie.
The Underminer, like many elements of the Incredibles' world, appears to be inspired by the Fantastic Four comics, specifically by the villain Mole Man.
The Incredibles
The Underminer made his first appearance at the end of The Incredibles when the heroes of the film, the Parr family, are leaving Dashiell Parr's race in his school sports. The villain, about a block away from them, drills out of the ground with a giant drilling machine and announces through a speaker to the citizens of Metroville "Behold, the Underminer! I am always beneath you, but nothing is beneath me! I hereby declare war on peace and happiness! Soon, ALL will tremble before me!".
The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer
In the sequel video game to the first film that takes place just seconds after the movie ends, the Underminer begins his invasion on the Earth via Metroville with his weapons and robots. He is chased underground by Mr. Incredible and Frozone and loses them after a prolonged pursuit against the villain. However, shortly after Mr. Incredible destroys the Underminer's Magnomizer machine, which was meant to destroy the Earth's magnetic poles and eliminate everything topside, the villain warns the Crustodian, who looks over the Underminer's Gilgenbot factory. And as it is, the Gilgenbots are giant, building-like robots that are meant to further the Underminer's doomsday invasion. But despite the Crustodian's efforts, the Gilgenbot factory is destroyed with ninety-nine out of one hundred Gilgenbots destroyed (the Underminer already had one with him, Mr. Incredible and Frozone destroyed only three, and the Crustodian destroyed the other ninety-six robots when he tricked Mr. Incredible and Frozone into activating a bomb to destroy the factory to cover the robot's failures). The Underminer then orders his robots to terminate the scientists whom he held against their will into helping him further his plans, but thanks to a turncoat robot named Dug, who ran the underwater power and pressure plant, Mr. Incredible and Frozone saved those scientists and shut down the Corrupterator, the Underminer's second pollution-making machine. The Underminer had no idea how to turn the Corrupterator back on, but Mr. Incredible and Frozone fail to stop him from reaching back up to the surface to rejoin his Gilgenbot. He engages Mr. Incredible and Frozone in combat with a drilling machine and several other backup robots, as well as minor support from the Gilgenbot himself, but in the end of the battle, Mr. Incredible and Frozone beat up on the Underminer's drilling machine so much that it malfunctions and flies up into the sky to come crashing down on top of the Gilgenbot's head. It is presumed that the Underminer died here, but his scream of, "No!", can still be heard in the background as the Gilgenbot sputters and then falls over to its side. The Underminer's certain fate is left ambiguous, but it is most likely that he died here.
