Biography

As the son of keyboardist Barry Andrews (XTC, Shriekback), the Veils' Finn Andrews knew nothing else except a world full of music and art. He had plans to become a painter as a young lad; however, a move to his grandmother's abode in Devonport, New Zealand (near Auckland) with his mother pointed Andrews in a different direction during his teenage years. He frequented the local folk scene to escape the ho-hum of country living. Once consumed with his father's electronic work from the 1980s, Andrews was now interested in Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, and Tom Waits.

In 2001, Andrews (vocals/guitar), then 18, returned to London. He befriended Ben Woollacott (drums), Adam Kinsella (bass), and Oliver Drake (guitar), and in a few months time the Veils were born. By fall, Rough Trade's Geoff Travis signed the foursome to the Blanco y Negro imprint, and immediately the Veils began working on their first album. They issued the single "Guiding Light" in 2002; however, contractual disparities and artistic differences with Blanco y Negro turned into a two-year battle until Travis signed the Veils to Rough Trade proper in mid-2003. Luckily, the Veils were able to keep songs recorded during that time. A second single, the lovelorn "Lavinia," was well received at indie rock radio in the U.K.. Shared dates with the Raveonettes, Beth Orton, and British Sea Power preceded the spring 2004 release of the Veils' debut, The Runaway Found.

The album had only been out two months when Andrews announced the departure of Woollacott, Kinsella, and Drake. In late June 2004, Andrews explained via the Veils' website (www.theveils.com) that a second album was already in the works, but that the original members would not be involved. Instead, he had returned to New Zealand, where he met up with former high-school classmates Sophia Burn (bass) and Liam Gerard (piano, organ), who then went back with him to London to begin Nux Vomica, the Veils' sophomore release, an album that then came out in the winter of 2006 (and the spring of 2007 in the U.S.). For the accompanying tour Andrews added drummer Henning Dietz and guitarist Dan Raishbrook to the band. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

The Veils are a New Zealand band based in London, fronted by lead singer/songwriter, Finn Andrews.

The Veils sound has been likened to artists as diverse as Jeff Buckley, The Birthday Party & The Smiths. Their live shows have become famed for their emotional intensity and Finn's often scarily possessed stage presence.
They have a small but incredibly dedicated fanbase worldwide with fans often crossing continents to see their shows. Fan obsession with the band has at times been seriously fanatical, with three suicides in Japan allegedly caused by the splitting of the first incarnation of The Veils.[1] Finn has cited these events as being part of the reason for his regular retreats back home to New Zealand to write and escape this increasing pressure.[2]

History

Finn started playing music in a folk club in Devonport, New Zealand, on an extinct volcano in an old World War II ammunitions bunker[3]. Finn played in a 12 piece band there for 3 years, where he first started composing his own music.

When Finn reached 16 he left school and moved to London to form a band and find a record label to record his compositions under. Within a month Geoff Travis of Rough Trade Records had signed him to Blanco Y Negro and they began recording their debut album, The Runaway Found, in 2001.

A court battle ensued due to a dispute between Warner Brothers & Blanco, which ended in 2003, after which The Veils were allowed to keep their recordings. Geoff Travis signed them to Rough Trade, under which they finished recording their album.

The original lineup of The Veils (Andrews, Adam Kinsella, Oliver Drake and Ben Woollacott) disbanded in late 2004 following a string of inter-band altercations related to the future sound of the band, and Andrews returned to New Zealand in order to find a new lineup and the write a new record. He spent the New Zealand summer rehearsing with high school classmates Liam Gerrard (keyboards) and Sophia Burn (bass), and the trio returned to London early 2005.

The group recorded their second album Nux Vomica at Underbelly Studios in Los Angeles, with producer Nick Launay, and the album was released September 18, 2006. The album features string arrangements by ex-Lounge Lizard and long time Lou Reed collaborator Jane Scarpontoni. Nux Vomica featured on 9 critics Best Of The Year lists in 2006.

During their US tour in summer of 2007 they announced that Gerrard was tired of touring and had decided to leave the band and return home to his girlfriend in New Zealand. The Veils now continue on as a 4 piece with a 3rd album rumoured for release early 2008.

Trivia

  • Finn's father Barry Andrews has collaborated with numerous musicians in his career, but began as keyboard player for eccentric New Wave pioneers XTC. He guested on Iggy Pop's record Soldier with David Bowie and has collaborated with Brian Eno on various projects including his latest studio album. He toured with Robert Fripp & The League of Gentlemen during the early 1980's and continues to release albums with his band Shriekback.
  • There are many speculations as to where The Veils got their name, however the most popular theory is that it was lifted from the Sylvia Plath poem 'A Birthday Present' which repeats the word 'Veils' throughout and is also the name of a song on their second album Nux Vomica.
  • One of Finn's snakeskin boots (thrown into the crowd at a gig in Berlin) fetched over $900 on eBay.[citation needed]
  • Finn has Res Ipsa Loquitur tattooed on his right shoulder, a Latin phrase which translates as 'The Thing Speaks Only For Itself'. This phrase also appears on the spine of the record Nux Vomica.

Media Use

  • The Veils song Vicious Traditions was featured towards the end of the 2007 film Mr. Brooks.
  • The song 'The Valleys of New Orleans' was donated by the band for HBO's Hurricane Katrina appeal. The song was written 2 years earlier and contains lyrics eerily prescient of the disaster.
  • Their song "The Leavers Dance" featured at the end of episode 11 (the last episode aired)of the television show Life As We Know It.
  • The song 'Nux Vomica' featured in season 4 episode 17 of One Tree Hill
