Review

While most other volumes in the P-Vine compilation series Jive & Swing focus on obscure groups doing popular material, The Very Best of Swingin' Jive Transcriptions flips the coin, presenting some of the biggest artists of the '30s and '40s heard on very rare recordings. Making appearances are the Ink Spots, Nat King Cole, the Mills Brothers, Louis Jordan, Slim & Slam, Cab Calloway, Lucky Millinder, even Duke Ellington's Famous Orchestra on a hilarious toss-off called "Blip-Blip." Though the sound quality here doesn't match that of their more famous output, each of these artists excelled in more informal circumstances, and the results prove it. Highlights include Nat King Cole's "Got a Penny Benny," Slim & Slam's rendition of their most famous track ("The Flat Foot Floogie"), the Mills Brothers swinging through "Lulu's Back in Town," and Timmie Rogers' hilarious "Bring Enough Clothes for Three Days." ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
