Biography

The Watergypsies is an all-female San Diego, CA-based folk-rock group made up of guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist Sara Michal, guitarist and songwriter Christi Carver, and flutist and saxophone player Wendy Bartel. Michal and Carver teamed up first, performing for a while as a duo before meeting Bartel and adding her to the lineup. Carver and Michal are both skilled self-taught musicians, while Bartel has a degree in music therapy and has spent years studying her craft. As the Watergypsies, the threesome first appeared together in early 1999. Since that maiden performance, the band has toured across much of the United States, doing shows in bars and coffeehouses, as well as festivals.

In May of 2000, the Watergypsies released a prime debut album titled Witches' Brew. Tracks like "Something Good," "Earth," "Malice," "Our Time," "Shine," and "You" earned the band favorable reviews by most critics. With one success to urge them on, the group added a background vocalist and a keyboardist and began working on writing some new songs for a sophomore recording. ~ Charlotte Dillon, All Music Guide
