The White Cockade

White Cockade, The (1905), a ‘folk-history’ play by Lady Gregory produced by the Abbey Theatre and set at the time of the Williamite War. After his defeat, James II tries to escape by hiding in a barrel but is discovered. Patrick Sarsfield tries to restore his courage but fails, and pretends to be king in his place, while James escapes.
