The White Oak Dance Project

Dictionary of Dance: The White Oak Dance Project

Dance company founded in 1990 by Mikhail Baryshnikov in collaboration with Mark Morris. Led by Baryshnikov it draws on a pool of mature, independent dancers from a wide range of backgrounds, including Jamie Bishton (ex-Tharp company), Rob Besserer (ex-Morris company), and Patricia Lent (ex-Cunningham company). During its first year it performed only Morris's choreography, but it has since added new works by Taylor, Tharp, Robbins, Lubovitch, Reitz, G. Murphy, and others, and revived works by Graham, Holm, Dudley, M. Monk, Limón, and Cunningham, among others. With a base at the White Oak Plantation wild life reserve, it tours internationally and in the US.
