In 2002, Queen Katherine School students Hayden Thorpe (Born January 18, 1986) and Ben Little formed the duo Fauve, the French term for wild beast, and began writing original songs.[1] In January 2004, the band acquired the drumming skills of Chris Talbot, otherwise known as 'Bert' and changed the band's name to The Wild Beasts.[1] Wild Beasts quickly moved into their first practice studio at Mintsfeet Industrial Estate. With the aid of Gareth Bullock (a stand in bassist), in June 2004 the band began recording their first demo EP titled 'Wild Beasts'.
In September 2005 the band relocated to Leeds and Tom Fleming joined as full time bassist. They soon gained a following within the city and recorded their second demo EP titled 'Espirit De Corps'. The band quickly followed up with a third demo EP titled 'All Men'.
The band signed for Bad Sneakers Records in August 2006. Bad Sneakers Records released Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants.[2] This first single was released on 20 November 2006. The Wild Beasts recorded a live session for BBC Radio 6 Music on 2006-01-11, which went out on Marc Riley's Brain Surgery and they performed 3 tracks.[3]
With Hayden's "enormous falsetto voice, which soars over chiming guitars,"[2] Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants was placed at number 17 in the national independent record labels chart, which is published by the UK chart company in its first week of release.[citation needed] The A-Side of Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants has been characterized as a pumped up dance tune.[4] The B-side The Old Dog has been characterized as equally as charming and unfashionable as the A-side.[5]
Their debut single Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants also was placed in circulation on BBC 6 Music and won Steve Lamacq's Rebel Playlist on BBC 6 Music in January 2007.[6][7]
In February 2007 Wild Beasts signed to Domino Records.[8]. A second single was launched on Bad Sneakers Records on 23 April 2007. A side "Through Dark Night",[9] with B side "Please, Sir" is the last Bad Sneakers release before recording for Domino. The video has appeared on MTV2.
In May 2007, music magazine NME listed the Wild Beasts as one of ten bands "tipped for the top."[10][11]
"The Devil's Crayon" single was released in June 2008[12] with the album "Limbo, Panto"[13] released on June 16 2008[12]
An early review of the band's second album, Two Dancers, published on ClashMusic.com reads: "Affecting, audacious, captivating of fantastical flourishes, it's an album to champion ‘til all superlatives are spent." The review is scored 9/10.[14]. The album was released 3 August 2009 in the UK, and 8 September 2009 in the U.S.[15][16]. UK newspaper The Sunday Times gave the album its Album Of The Week accolade, reviewing it 5/5 and described it as "one of 2009's indisputable masterpieces".[17].
