The World Is Not Enough is a first-person shooter video game based on the James Bond film of the same name. The game was published by Electronic Arts and released for the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation console systems in 2000. The Nintendo 64 version was developed by Eurocom and the PlayStation version was developed by Black Ops. Black Ops had previously developed the James Bond game Tomorrow Never Dies. Eurocom would later go on in 2002 to develop the Bond game Nightfire. Versions of The World Is Not Enough for the PC and the PlayStation 2 were planned for release in 2000, but were later cancelled. This game marks the fifth appearance of Pierce Brosnan's James Bond, the game included his likeness but not his voice.

Coming off the critical failure of the previous Bond game, Tomorrow Never Dies, it was decided that The World Is Not Enough would go back to its roots as a first-person shooter, popularized by the success of the Bond game GoldenEye 007. In the Nintendo 64 version, it would also see the reintroduction of the multiplayer portion of the game that gave GoldenEye 007 such a lasting appeal.

Features

The Nintendo 64 version supports the Rumble Pak controller accessory, as well as the Expansion Pak, with which the resolution of the game's graphics is enhanced. It features 14 single-player levels, as well as multiplayer mode with 4-player support and AI bots. Like GoldenEye 007, there are three difficulty levels: Agent, Secret Agent, and 00 Agent, with 00 Agent being the hardest.

The PlayStation version features 11 single-player levels with two levels of difficulty. It does not, however, have a multiplayer mode.

Multiplayer

The World is not Enough also has a multiplayer mode. You can unlock new levels by achieving the actual level in a certain time. Also, the multiplayer has a wide variety of characters you can play as, including An MI6 agent, M, Robinson, and even Moneypenny. Some characters health are based on their popularity, or how they are portrayed in the movie. For example, Oddjob's health is 250, while Max Zorin's is at 200. Jaws has the most health, with 300.

Weapons

As with GoldenEye 007, the in-game weapons are based on actual weapons, but with the names changed. For example, Bond's sidearm, called "Wolfram P2K" in-game, is based on the Walther P99. The Nintendo 64 version was the first 1st-person James Bond game wherein the player could switch the 'mode' in which a weapon operated, such as mounting or removing a silencer or switching from single-shot to full auto, although silenced weapons had appeared in GoldenEye as separate weapons. This is also the first Bond game in which Bond's "Q watch" contains a grappling feature.

Critical reception

The game was met with nearly all positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes currently has a 86% "fresh" rating. Many critics like the way you can save many allies, especially in the levels at Valentin Zukovsky's factory. The multiplayer was said to be the best part of the game, not giving bad reviews to the actual game. As of 2009, IGN lists The World Is Not Enough as the second best Bond game ever, next to GoldenEye. The rec 88 positive reviews out of 100, while IGN gave it a 9.6/10. The least score for the game came from GameSpy, which gave a 8.5 of 10, and 1UP.com, which gave a B+. The only negative points were drawn at the fact that sometimes on the easy level (mostly on the harder levels), it takes more than one head shot to kill your enemies.
