Review

The double-disc collection The X List features an eclectic array of underground rap, rock, and electronica as played on the U.K.'s alternative music station XFM. Along with such worldwide hits as Coldplay's "Clocks," the Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots," and the Dandy Warhols' rather long-in-the-tooth "Not if You Were the Last Junkie on Earth," this compilation also features some uniquely British phenomena: The baggy-pop of the Mock Turtles' "Can You Dig It?" was a minor hit for them in the early '90s, but became a major U.K. smash in 2003 when Fatboy Slim and Simon Thornton remixed it for a cell phone commercial. Likewise, the collection also has the scoop on some up-and-coming bands, such as Athlete's sunny "El Salvador," the Thrills' shimmering-yet-stomping "One Horse Town," and the darkly mod-pop of the Caesars' "Jerk It Out." Live performances such as Oasis' "Songbird" and the Vines' radical reworking of OutKast's "Miss Jackson" add an extra something to the album, as do solid tracks by venerable artists like Supergrass, Feeder, the Doves, and Richard Ashcroft. While the overwhelming focus is on rock, some electronic and rap tracks pop up from time to time, such as Audio Bullys' "We Don't Care," Massive Attack and Sinéad O'Connor's "Special Cases," Röyksopp's "Eple," N.E.R.D.'s "Provider [Zero 7 Radio Edit]" and Snoop Dogg, Pharrell, and Uncle Charlie Wilson's "Beautiful." Other highlights include Junior Senior's "Move Your Feet," the Datsuns' "Harmonic Generator," Radio 4's "Eyes Wide Open," and the Polyphonic Spree's "Light and Day." While not every track on The X List is a total winner, it's a pretty solid collection, especially for Anglophiles who like to stay on the cutting edge of what's being listened to in the U.K. ~ Heather Phares, Rovi
