Theobald Boehm

(born April 9, 1794, Munich, Bavaria — died Nov. 25, 1881, Munich, German Empire) German flutist and flute designer. Son of a goldsmith, he was a self-taught virtuoso flutist. Realizing that the craft he learned from his father could be put to use to improve the instrument, he created a new kind of key mechanism in 1832. He later studied acoustics, and by 1847 he had completely redesigned the flute, giving it a different internal shape, moving the holes, and extending the use of the keys. His work achieved a stronger and more uniform tone than that of earlier instruments and formed the basis for the modern flute.

(b Munich, 9 April 1794; d there, 25 Nov 1881). German flautist, goldsmithand ironmaster. He worked out the proportions and devised the mechanism of the modern flute, establishing a factory in Munich in 1828 and introducing his first prototype in 1832. It had a tapered bore larger than usual and was constructed on a system of ‘open holes’ controlled by interlinked keys with ring touchpieces encircling the finger-holes (the first Boehm keywork). Although opposition and his duties in the Bavarian steel industry (1833-46) slowed progress, he produced an improved design in 1847 (a cylinder flute with tapered head and revised hole positions), which has remained essentially unchanged.

Biography

Theobald Boehm was the son of a goldsmith and learned that craft as a matter of course while growing up. He taught himself flageolet and flute, using a one-keyed instrument. In 1810 he came to the notice of Johann Nepomuk Capeller, a flute player who gave him lessons until 1812 and at that time declared there was nothing more he could teach him.

Boehm toured for a few years, and then in 1818 was appointed a court musician. In the meantime, he had been working on making technical improvements to the flute. As early as 1810, he had built himself a copy of a four-keyed flute by a Dresden instrument maker named Grenser. In 1823 he established a flute-making factory, Boehm & Grève of Munich. In 1831 Boehm traveled to give some concerts in Paris and London. Although the tour went well, he noticed the greater success of a flutist named Nicholson, who got superior volume of tone because he used a type of flute that had become popular in England. This instrument had larger finger-holes.

After his return to Munich, he and Grève produced a new model of flute with a larger bore and larger finger holes. Since these are harder to cover than the traditional-sized holes, Boehm added ringed touchpieces that would seat themselves evenly over the holes. Due to opposition from jealous colleagues, this new design made slow progress. But before long it had spread from Germany to other countries.

In 1846 and 1847 Boehm devoted himself entirely to the study of acoustics. Using what he learned, he redesigned most aspects of the instrument, making beauty of tone rather than ease of fingering the criterion for the placement of each hole. The holes were large, and were ordinarily completely covered by padded covers. These were lifted by a system of keys. This design has proven to be applicable to flutes of all sizes, and has been adapted to other woodwind instruments. Although other designers have made some modifications to Boehm's layout, the essence of it has proven highly practical and reliable and has remained the standard for flutes since the new "Boehm system" flutes first appeared in 1847. ~ Joseph Stevenson, All Music Guide

Theobald Böhm (or Boehm) (April 9, 1794November 27, 1881) was a German inventor and musician, who perfected the modern Western concert flute and its improved fingering system. In addition, he was a virtuoso flautist and was a Bavarian Court Musician as well as a celebrated composer for the flute.[1]

Born in Munich in Bavaria, Boehm learned his father's trade of goldsmithing. After making his own flute, he quickly became proficient enough to play in an orchestra at the age of eighteen and at twenty-one he was first flautist in the Royal Bavarian Orchestra.[2] Meanwhile, he experimented with constructing flutes out of many different materials such as tropical hardwoods (usually Grenadilla wood), silver, gold, nickel and copper as well as experimenting with changing the positions of the flute's tone holes. After studying acoustics at the University of Munich, he began experimenting on improving the flute in 1832, first patenting his new fingering system in 1847.[2] He published Über den Flötenbau ("On the construction of flutes"), also in 1847.[1] His new flute was first displayed in 1851 at the London Exhibition.[3] In 1871 Boehm published Die Flöte und das Flötenspiel ("The Flute and Flute-Playing"), a treatise on the acoustical, technical and artistic characteristics of the Boehm system flute.[1] Many people admire his work, and some of the flutes he made still function. His fingering system has also been adapted to other instruments, such as the oboe and the clarinet.[2]
