A longtime favorite of New York theatergoers, bizarre German-born performance artist and monologist Theodore Gottlieb spent the 1980s appearing as Brother Theodore in his own long-running off-off-Broadway show, when not guesting on The Billy Crystal Comedy Hour (1982) or Late Night With David Letterman. In the U.S. after being liberated from the Nazi concentration camp Dachau, Gottlieb played the evil Hitomu, planning to assume control of the entire world along with his fortune-telling daughter Sombra Carol Forman) in the 1947 Republic serial The Black Widow. Other screen appearances were minor and far between until the 1980s, when Gottlieb's Brother Theodore character popped up in such films as The Invisible Kid (1987) and The 'Burbs (1988). ~ Hans J.
