TUE
A system created by UK Sport, whereby an athlete suffering from a legitimate medical condition can apply for permission to use substances or methods that are otherwise prohibited (see Prohibited List). Applications for a TUE must be completed by prescribing doctors and submitted to the sport governing body or federation or (in the case of UK athletes) UK Sport as soon as therapeutic use is required and no less than 21 days before the commencement of competition. For athletes with urine found to contain a diuretic, a TUE is not valid if the diuretic is found in association with threshold or subthreshold levels of a substance on the Prohibited List. There are two types of TUE: a standard TUE and an Abbreviated TUE (or ATUE). The ATUE is used by athletes prior to the legitimate use of asthma medications such as salbutamol.
