Biography

Violinist and singer/songwriter Theresa Andersson, who was born and raised on the Swedish island of Gotland, emigrated to the U.S. in 1990 at age 18 with her then-companion, guitarist Anders Osborne, and the couple settled in New Orleans, where Andersson first appeared on records by Osborne and by Merritt Doggins & the Bloodhounds. Rabadash Records released her debut solo album, the jazz-styled Vibes, in 1994. Sessions continued as she appeared on albums by Marva Wright, the Shines, Rockin' Jake Band, Cowboy Mouth, Lenny McDaniel, Mike West, George McCorkle, Jonas Risin', Galactic, the Radiators, Martin Hoybye, Kenny Edwards, Johnny Sketch & the Dirty Notes, and Gary Hirstius, among others, in the late '90s and early 2000s, while relocating to Nashville, Austin, and then back to New Orleans. Her second solo album, No Regrets, was released by PoVolt Records in 2002. Basin Street Records issued her third solo album, Shine, on April 20, 2004. Her songs were featured in the cable-TV movies The Brook Ellison Story and Infidelity, and she made cameo appearances in both. She also had a cameo in the feature film A Love Song for Bobby Long, and she sang Neil Young's "Like a Hurricane" in the cable-TV movie New Orleans Music in Exile. A self-titled EP appeared on May 30, 2006, as Andersson embarked on a tour of the South, accompanied by a four-piece band made up of former members of World Leader Pretend. Her next record, 2008's Hummingbird, Go!, was produced by fellow Swede singer/songwriter Tobias Fröberg and featured a cameo by New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Theresa Andersson (born 1972, Gotland, Sweden) is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She came to New Orleans in 1990 to play violin with fellow singer-songwriter and Swede, Anders Osborne. Nine years later, she left the band. Since then, Theresa has performed and recorded with several well known New Orleans Musicians, including Allen Toussaint, The Neville Brothers, The Meters and Betty Harris. Clearly influenced by her musical peers, Theresa cites the New Orleans rhythmic sensibility as being a critical part of her sound. On February 4, 2009, Theresa performed on Late Night With Conan O'Brien. Theresa also performed on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson on Wednesday, June 10th, 2009.

One-Woman Show

Inspired by a one-man-puppet-show (Blair Thomas, Chicago), in which the puppeteer played multiple characters and the drums, Theresa overcame the financial impracticality of touring Europe with a band by learning to play with a loop pedal. She began by looping just her violin, voice, and guitar. But, wanting to create a richer sound live, Theresa began thinking about adding another loop pedal and more instruments. As a result, Theresa currently travels with two loop pedals, which she uses simultaneously, along with her record player, drums, dulcimer, guitar, and violin.

Hummingbird, Go!

Theresa’s idea for her most recent release was borne while touring Sweden, when she met with producer Tobias Froberg. With little prodding, like-minded Tobias flew to New Orleans in the fall of 2007, where the two recorded Hummingbird, Go! in Theresa’s kitchen. Theresa played most of the instruments on the album, with exception on two duets: one with New Orleans producer Allen Toussaint, and the other with Norwegian Singer Ane Brun. The album was mixed by Linus Larsson (Peter, Bjorn and John, Mercury Rev).

Online Success

Theresa’s do-it-yourself video for her song "Na Na Na" has become a YouTube sensation, garnering over 950,000 views.[1] Originally shot as a promotional video to help music venues understand how she would be touring, the video went viral during the summer of 2008. Theresa filmed the video, and a second one for her song, "Birds Fly Away"[2] in the same kitchen where she recorded her album Hummingbird, Go!
