A contemporary engraving of the conspirators (detail). By the Dutch artist, Crispijn van de Passe the Elder.[1] He probably never met any of the conspirators, but the print has become well-known nonetheless.

Bates was born at Lapworth and had been a long serving employee of the Catesby family. He was a key employee of Robert Catesby and Bates had servants of his own. His master took him into the details of the plot after he suspected that Bates was suspicious of the conspiracy. Bates was asked to take the sacrement to deal the secrets that had been shared with him. This sacrement was said later to have been done after a full confession to Father Oswald Tesimond and it is the forgivess given here that implicated priests who were not directly involved with the plot.

His wife managed to throw herself onto him during his execution and he was able to tell her where 100 pounds was hidden that had been given to him by Christopher Wright (another plotter). This money was largely intended for Wright's family and only twenty of it was for Bates.[2]
