Campbell, Thomas, 1777-1844, Scottish poet. He is best known for his war poems "Hohenlinden," "The Battle of the Baltic," and "Ye Mariners of England." Among his other volumes of poetry are The Pleasure of Hope (1799), Gertrude of Wyoming (1809); and Theodric (1824).

1809Gertrude of Wyoming. The first popular English poem set in the United States and including Native American characters, this long narrative work tells of Gertrude's life and tragic death in her lover's arms after an Indian attack. The poem meets with mixed reviews but finds favor with Washington Irving, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and much of the American and British public, selling out three British editions and one American edition in two years.
