US Military Dictionary:

Thomas Carmichael Hindman

Hindman, Thomas Carmichael (1828-68) Confederate army general, born in Knoxville, Tennessee. Hindman experienced frequent changes of command because of his practice of total war and tendency to become embroiled in conflicts with his superiors. He fought with the Army of Mississippi at Prairie Grove (1862) and with the Army of Tennessee at Chattanooga (1863) before returning to the Trans-Mississippi, where he spent the remainder of the war. Hindman had been active in politics before the war, serving in the Mississippi state legislature (1854) and in Congress as a representative from Arkansas (first elected 1858).

Hindman was assassinated, but his murderer was never found and the motivation for the deed remains murky.
