US Military Dictionary: Thomas Casimir Devin

Devin, Thomas Casimir (1822-78) Union army officer, born in New York City. As a volunteer officer in the 6th New York Cavalry, Devin participated with the Army of the Potomac in the battles of South Mountain and Antietam (both 1862). As commander of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade under division commander Maj. Gen. John Buford, he helped delay the advance of the Confederate troops into Gettysburg (1863) sufficiently to ensure a Union victory.

An outstanding disciplinarian and field tactician, Devin was known as “Buford's Hard Hitter” and “Buford's Old War Horse.”
