Thomas Heggen won the Tony Award in 1948 for Best Author and Best Play for his Broadway play, Mister Roberts. The play was based on Heggen's novel of the same name, which he had based on his own experiences in the navy; he collaborated on the play with Joshua Logan. In 1955, the play was adapted for the screen, with Henry Fonda playing the title role.

A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Heggen worked as a columnist and editor for the Minnesota Daily.

1946Mister Roberts. Based on the author's own naval service, this entertaining and popular account of life aboard a cargo ship in the Pacific involves a martinet captain, an oddball, rowdy crew, and a beloved cargo officer. Heggen would collaborate with Joshua Logan on the 1948 dramatic adaptation; actor Henry Fonda would play the title character both on Broadway and in the successful 1955 film adaptation. The Iowa-born Heggen worked for Reader's Digest before and after sea duty in the Pacific.
