Three Great Swing Saxophones

Review

This CD is a best-of collection that includes performances showcasing the tenors of Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster and altoist Benny Carter, mostly from the swing era. Hawk is heard with Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra, playing "One Hour" and "Hello Lola" with The Mound City Blue Blowers, on two versions of "Dinah" with Lionel Hampton, soloing a song with McKinney's Cotton Pickers and performing his famous version of "Body and Soul." Webster is featured with Bennie Moten, Willie Bryant, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington (including "Cotton Tail") and Rex Stewart while Carter is heard with McKinney's Cotton Pickers, Mezz Mezzrow, Hampton and with his own bands in 1940-41. Very much a sampler (virtually all of the music is available elsewhere), this set serves as a fine introduction to the early work of these classic players. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
