Poker Guide: Trips

A player who has 3 of the same ranking cards (J - J - J) using their hand and/or the community cards. In hold'em when a player holds a pair and one of the community cards matches the pocket pair this is called a "set".

SoundPoker Says: If two players both hold 3 of a kind, then the player with the higher cards wins. If player 1 holds K - K - K then the only other 3 of a kind which can beat them is A - A - A. If both players make the same 3 of a kind using their hand plus the community cards, then the player with the higher side card (kicker) will win. Using Texas hold 'em as an example, let's say Joe holds A - K and Susie holds A - 4. If the board shows A - Q - 2 - A - 8 than Joe will win with A - A - A - K - Q. While Susie will also have A - A - A (both player have three Aces) Joe will win a result of his kicker which is the King.
