What is this medicine?

THROMBIN stops bleeding during surgery.

This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions.

What should I tell my health care provider before I take this medicine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
• an unusual or allergic reaction to beef products, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• breast-feeding

How should I use this medicine?

This medicine is given by a health-care professional in a hospital or clinic setting.

Talk to your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

An enzyme resulting from activation of prothrombin, which catalyzes the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. It is also a potent stimulus to the aggregation of platelets. A preparation from prothrombin of bovine origin is used as a topical hemostatic.

• t.–thrombomodulin complex — thrombomodulin, a specific endothelial cell surface receptor, converts thrombin, a very weak activator of protein C in the anticoagulant pathway, to the status of a very active protein C activator.
• t. time — the time required for a standardized solution of thrombin to clot plasma. It is a measure of the rate of conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin.
