Review

Flaw is one of the few groups to eschew post-grunge à la Creed and modern-day rap-metal, preferring to instead play straightforward metallic rock that relies less upon gimmickry and more on musical prowess and aggression, making the group peers of latter-day Metallica and Staind. Vocalist Chris Volz's powerful and melodious singing voice leads almost all of the tracks, with solid yet unspectacular guitars and rhythms layered underneath his emotive voice. When he screams, though, it's as if he feels obligated to try, and a few catchy tracks -- such as the lead single, "Payback," and the eerie "My Letter" -- are surrounded by filler that fails to stick. ~ Brian O'Neill, All Music Guide

Through the Eyes is the major label debut album of alternative metal group Flaw. It was released in 2001 on Universal Records.

With its brutal chorus, "Payback" would serve as the album's lead single in the summer of 2001 and was backed by a music video. The dark and eerie "Whole" followed as a second release, and interestingly enough, features vocalist Chris Volz in a vastly different look than the previous video. Both songs boast unique and complex opening bass lines. The opening track, "Only the Strong," was also featured in the Scorpion King soundtrack.

Through the Eyes features a combination of clean vocals and screaming as well as highly distorted and melodic guitar work. Songs such as "Get Up Again" and "Reliance" focus primarily on aggressive melodies while "My Letter" and "Best I Am" could perhaps be considered power ballads. Themes of angst and rage are found throughout the album and are quite common in the nu metal genre; however, many of the songs on Through the Eyes also express hope and pride in one's self. Lyrics center around topics such as the suicide of Volz's mother. "Whole," in particular, focuses on this.[1][2]

  • Before the airing of the "Whole" music video on Uranium, a fan being interviewed revealed a large Flaw tattoo across his shoulder and referenced "Only the Strong" in regards to his philosophy.
