Thy Serpent is a Symphonic black/doom/dark metal band from Espoo, Finland. It started out as a solo project from guitarist Sami Tenetz. After two demos, he signed a record deal with Spinefarm Records. Then, Thy Serpent got some band members in order to create a lineup. In 1996, they released their first album called Forests Of Witchery. The track Only Dust Moves was added as a B-side to the CD single The Carpenter by Nightwish. After their debut album's success, two other albums Lords Of Twilight and Christcrusher, followed.
In contrary to statements of Tenetz that they would never play live, they did eight concerts on Finnish soil in the summer of 1999. In 2000, Thy Serpent changed its lineup a little and went to the studio to record the MCD Death. Up to today, this release remains the last heard of Thy Serpent. They seem never to have played anywhere again or released new music, however have also never officially stated that they broke up either.
