Biography

Mexican alternative band Tijuana No was formed by the end of the 1980s, playing under the name of No, at the beginning. Combining rock and traditional Mexican music, the act has been mostly known for compromising itself in the defense of indigenous groups and writing eloquent lyrics about it. That main characteristic was made evident when the band played at a benefit for the Zapatista movement called Rock por Chiapas. Tijuana No's self-titled debut album was released in 1993, followed by 1994's Transgresores de La Ley. During the 1990s, the band had the opportunity to interact with local and U.S. numbers, while touring all around California. Tijuana No's third album, called Contra-Revolución Ave, came out in 1998. ~ Drago Bonacich, All Music Guide

Tijuana No! is a Mexican Ska, Rock and Punk band, from Tijuana BC, México. In the beginning their name was Radio Chantaje (Blackmail Radio), and later they became No, but upon the knowledge of another band called the same, they changed their name to No de Tijuana (Not From Tijuana), to later just shorten it to Tijuana No!. They were characterized by the social criticism in their lyrics, where they also showed their support to the EZLN, and made reference in their songs to racial, international and governmental problems, mainly to the immigration policies in the state of California. In 1991 they record their first album under an independent label, and one year later (1992) they release the same album (with some design changes) under Culebra Records (BMG), who gave them international recognition promoting the single Pobre de Ti (Poor You).

In its early stages they had the participation of Mexican singer Julieta Venegas, who abandoned the band due to the political views of the grouping. Luis Güereña, one of the three singers the group had, died in 2004 due to a heart attack while he was watching television at his home in Tijuana. His close friends and family said that Güereña struggled with heroin and died as a result of an overdose.[citation needed]

The group officially disbanded in December 2002, although they have met occasionally to pay tribute to their companion Luis Güereña.
