Tim McDonald (born January 6, 1965 in Fresno, California) is a former professional American football player who played strong safety in the NFL.

High school
McDonald played high school football at Edison High School in Fresno.[1]
Named prep All-American, All-California, All-Northern California, all-metro and league MVP at both safety and QB at Edison High School ... Completed 56.9 percent of his passes for 2,739 yards and 30 TDs ... Rushed for 400 yards and six TDs ... Credited with five INTs and 123 tackles on defense.
Professional career
He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round (34th pick overall) of the 1987 NFL Draft. He signed as a free agent by the San Francisco 49ers on April 7, 1993 where he helped the 49ers win the Super Bowl XXIX, and retired after the 1999 season. During the 1993 season, he donated $2,000 for every 49ers victory to the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Bay Area, netting $22,000 for those organizations. McDonald was voted to the Pro Bowl six times in his career, three times with each team.
College career
He attended the University of Southern California (USC), and majored in business administration at what is now the Marshall School of Business. As a three year starter, he accumlated 325 tackles and 11 interceptions. He was a consensus All-American as a senior in 1986, and followed a prominent list of All-American safeties who attended USC such as Dennis Thurman, Ronnie Lott, Dennis Smith, Joey Browner, Charles Phillips, Artimus Parker, Mike Battle and Mark Carrier. McDonald is one of only six Safeties named on the Walter Camp All-Century Team[2] selected in 1999, celebrating the greatest College Football players of the 20th Century. He was also a Finalist as a senior for the Jim Thorpe Award ... Defensive Player of the Game in the 1987 East-West Shrine Game.
McDonald wore # 6 for the Trojans and played strong safety at USC alongside the brother of another former USC All-American standout Dennis Thurman who wore # 7 at USC named Ulysses "Junior" Thurman who like his brother, Dennis prepped at Santa Monica High. Dennis Thurman later became both a player and secondary coach for the St. Louis Cardinals under Gene Stallings.
Coaching career
McDonald coached youth football leading the Malloch Elementary football team to two undefeated seasons from 2001-2003. He is currently the football coach for his alma mater Edison High School in Fresno, where he coached his son, Timothy McDonald, Jr.
Personal life
McDonald has a daughter, Alycia, and two sons, Timothy, Jr. and Tevin. Timothy is a safety from Edison High School, and recently signed a letter of intent with McDonald's alma mater USC.
