Review

Gellman's solo debut gets off on a bitter start with a lover kicking his alcoholic and unrepentant lover to the curb over a simple "Blowing In the Wind" guitar track. Typical of many self-produced projects, the tape suffers from a lack of strong production values, and that gets in the way of Gellman's better material, like "Pineapple Ice Cream." A paucity of hooks leaves the listener little to grasp, and filler like the standards "Summertime" and "Sonny" obviate the point that Gellman is struggling lyrically for something to say. And that's too bad. Gellman is capable of creating trancy dreams of poetic beauty shrouded in layers of sound, as he did so successfully in his ex-band Diamond Rose. Sadly, no diamonds here. ~ Will Grega, All Music Guide
