2000s
2009
- Rangers win The Double of the SPL and Scottish Cup, the latter having beaten Falkirk 1-0 in the final.
- Celtic win the Scottish League Cup after beating Rangers 2-0 in extra time in the final.
- Gordon Strachan leaves the managerial post at Celtic after 4 years, to be succeeded by former Celtic player Tony Mowbray.
- Inverness Caledonian Thistle are relegated from the SPL after a tenure of 5 seasons. St. Johnstone are promoted in their place.
- The SPL are forced to negotiate new contracts for live television coverage of matches after broadcaster Setanta Sports ceases broadcasting in the UK, later agreeing terms with Sky Sports and ESPN.
- Livingston F.C., after initially entering liquidation only to be removed from it a day later, are demoted from the First Division to the Third Division for 2009-10.
2008
- Celtic win the SPL for a 3rd time in a row. Gordon Strachan becomes the 1st Celtic manager to achieve 3 titles in a row since Jock Stein. This was Celtic's 42nd SPL Title.
- Rangers win the 2007–08 Scottish League Cup by beating Dundee United 3–2 in a penalty shootout after a 2–2 draw in the final at Hampden Park.
- East Fife confirm their promotion to the Second Division as Third Division champions with a 3–0 victory over East Stirlingshire, becoming the first team in Britain to win a league trophy in the 2007–08 season.[1]
- George Burley is appointed as Scotland manager.[2]
- SPL team Gretna go into administration[3] and receive a 10 point penalty as a result. Gretna confirm their relegation from the SPL on 29 March, after a 2–0 defeat to St. Mirren.[4] Unable to fulfil fixtures, they later resign from the Scottish Football League and folded.[5] The club's fans set up a new club, Gretna 2008, in its place.[6]
- An all-time low SPL attendance record was set in a Gretna match against Inverness Caledonian Thistle with a crowd of 431 on 5 April 2008.[7]
- Rangers lose 2–0 to Zenit St. Petersburg in the UEFA Cup Final on 14 May.[8]
2007
- Aberdeen beat Copenhagen 4–0 at Pittodrie to qualify from the Group Stage of the UEFA Cup[9]
- Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell, 35, collapsed on the pitch during a Scottish league match against Dundee United, and died shortly afterwards.[10]
- Celtic win the SPL title for the 41st time and beat Dunfermline Athletic to win the Scottish Cup for the 34th time.
- Celtic qualify from the European Cup group stage for the 1st time in their history. But are defeated by A.C. Milan in the second round.
- On 16 May 2007 Celtic sign Scott Brown from Hibernian for 4.4 Million. This was the highest transfer fee paid between two Scottish clubs.
2006
- Celtic win SPL title for 40th time.
- Heart of Midlothian win the Scottish Cup for the 7th time beating Gretna 4–2 after extra time
- Celtic win Scottish League Cup after defeating Dunfermline Athletic 3–0 in the final. This was Celtic's 13th Scottish League Cup success.
- Rangers qualify from the European Cup group stage for the 1st time. They are defeated by Villarreal in the second round on away goals.
2005
- Rangers win the SPL title in the dying seconds of the last match as Celtic concede two late goals.
2004
- Livingston win the League Cup for the first time after a 2–0 win over Hibernian in the final.
2003
- Celtic lose 3–2 to F.C. Porto after extra time in the UEFA Cup final.
- Rangers won their record breaking 50th SPL title.
2002
- Airdrieonians are liquidated. Gretna are admitted to the SFL in their place.
- A consortium buys out the few remaining assets of Clydebank, in order to bring Airdrie United into the league.
2001
- Celtic win the SPL title for the 37th time.
- Celtic win the Scottish Cup for the 31st time defeating Hibernian 3–0 in the final.
- Celtic win the Scottish League Cup for the 12th time defeating Kilmarnock 3–0 in the final. This completed Celtic's domestic treble.
- Henrik Larsson scores a record breaking 35 league goals and 53 overall for Celtic winning him the European Golden Boot.
2000

1998
- Celtic stop Rangers from winning a record 10 league titles in a row by winning the SPL for the 1st time in 10 years. This was Celtic's 36th SPL Title.
1997
- Rangers win their 9th title in a row, equaling Celtic's 9 league titles in a row record. This was Rangers's 47th SPL Title.
1995
- Celtic win their 1st trophy in six years. Winning the Scottish Cup by defeating Airdrieonians 1–0, thanks to a Pierre Van Hooijdonk goal.
1994
- Rangers win their 6th SPL Title in a row. This was Rangers 44th SPL Title.
- Dundee United defeat Rangers 1–0 thanks to a Craig Brewster goal to win their 1st ever Scottish Cup.
- Raith Rovers defeat Celtic 6–5 on penalties after a 2–2 draw in the League Cup final. It was Raith Rovers' first League Cup success.
- In July 1994 Brian Laudrup signs for Rangers for 2.3 Million.
1992
- Scotland reach the finals of the European Championship for the first time, going out after first round defeats to The Netherlands and Germany and a win over the CIS.
1991
- Motherwell defeat Dundee United 4–3 after extra time in the Scottish Cup final. It was Motherwell's 2nd Scottish Cup success.
1980s
1987
- Dundee United lose 2–1 on aggregate to IFK Göteborg in the final of the UEFA Cup.
- St Mirren beat Dundee United 1–0 in the final of the Scottish Cup.
1985
- Scotland qualify for the 1986 World Cup, but manager Jock Stein suffers a heart attack and dies during the qualifying match with Wales.
1983
- Aberdeen beat Real Madrid 2–1 after extra time to win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Aberdeen also win the UEFA Super Cup after a 2–0 aggregate win over Hamburger SV.
- Dundee United win the league title for the first time.
1970s
1979
- Dundee United win the 1979–80 League Cup to lift the trophy for the first time. They defeated Aberdeen 3–0 in the replayed final.
1974
- Scotland are eliminated from the 1974 World Cup on goal difference, despite not having lost a match.
1973
- A 2–1 win over Czechoslovakia at Hampden Park guarantees Scotland a place at the 1974 World Cup after finishing 1st in their qualifying group.
1972
- Rangers beat Dynamo Moscow 3–2 to win the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Rangers are beaten 6–3 on aggregate by European Cup winners Ajax in the UEFA Super Cup.
- Hibernian are winners of the 1972–73 League Cup after a 2–1 win over Celtic in the final to win the trophy for the first time.
1971
- 66 people die and over 200 are injured after a crush during a match between Rangers and Celtic at Ibrox Park, after a stairway gave way.
- Partick Thistle are winners of the League Cup for the first time after defeating Celtic 4–1 in the final.
1970
- Celtic lose 2–1 to Feyenoord in the final of the European Cup.

1967
- Celtic beat Inter Milan 2–1 in the final of the European Cup becoming the first British club to win that trophy. Celtic also win the domestic treble for the first time.
- Rangers lose 1–0 after extra time against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final.
- Third Lanark go out of business after becoming bankrupt.
1965
- Kilmarnock win the league title for the first time.
1962
- Dundee win the league title for the first time.
1961
- Rangers lose 4–1 on aggregate to ACF Fiorentina in the final of the inaugural UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
- Dunfermline Athletic under manager Jock Stein reach the final of the Scottish Cup for the first time and win the trophy beating Celtic 2-0 in a replay after a 0-0 draw.
1950s
1958
- Heart of Midlothian score a record 132 goals in winning 1st Division conceding only 29.
- Jimmy Murray scores Scotland's first ever World Cup Final goal in the World Cup.
- Scotland are eliminated from the World Cup at the group stage.
- In the first ever Old Firm League Cup final, Celtic defeat Rangers by a record breaking 7–1 to win the trophy. This final was dubbed Hampden in the sun by Celtic fans. This was Celtic's 2nd League cup success.
1957
- Scotland qualify for their second World Cup after finishing top of their qualifying group.
1956
- Celtic win the 1956–57 League Cup after a 3–0 win over Partick Thistle in the replayed final. It was Celtic's first League Cup trophy.
1955
- Aberdeen win the league title for the first time.
- Aberdeen win the 1955–56 League Cup after defeating St. Mirren 2–1 in the final to win the trophy for the first time.
1954
- After qualifying for the World Cup for the first time, Scotland are knocked-out after a 1–0 defeat to Austria and a 7–0 defeat to Uruguay. Andy Beattie, appointed manager for the World Cup campaign, is Scotland's first manager.
- Heart of Midlothian beat Motherwell 4–2 in the final of the League Cup to win the tournament for the first time.
1951
- Dundee win the League Cup for the first time after defeating Rangers 3–2 in the final.
1950
- Motherwell win the League Cup for the first time after a 3–0 win over Hibernian in the final.
1940s
1947
- Rangers defeat Aberdeen 4–0 at Hampden Park to win the 1946–47 inaugural League Cup. Rangers also win both the league title and the Scottish Cup - thereby becoming the first Scottish club to win domestic treble.
- East Fife are the second winners of the League Cup after defeating Falkirk 4–1 in the replayed final of the 1947–48 competition.

- Motherwell win the league title for the first time.
1931
- Celtic goalkeeper John Thomson dies after suffering a fractured skull after an accidental on-pitch collision with Rangers striker Sam English during league match at Ibrox Park.

1922
- Morton defeat Rangers 1-0 in the final of the Scottish Cup to win the competition for the first time.
1929
- Scotland play against opposition outside of England, Wales and Ireland for the first time, defeating Norway 7–3 in Bergen.

- Falkirk beat Raith Rovers 2–0 in the final of the Scottish Cup to win the trophy for the first time.

- Dundee win the Scottish Cup for the first time after beating Clyde 2–1 in the twice-replayed final.

- The Scottish Cup is withheld by the SFA after a riot in the final replay between Celtic and Rangers.

- Celtic become the first club to win both the league title and the Scottish Cup (the double) in the same season.
1904
- Third Lanark win the league title for the first time.
1903
- Hibernian win the league title for the first time.
1902
- 25 people are killed and 517 are injured after a stand collapses at Ibrox Park during a British Home Championship match between Scotland and England.

- Rangers win the league title after winning all 18 of their league matches.
1895
- Heart of Midlothian win the league title for the first time.
- St Bernard's beat Renton 2–1 in the Scottish Cup final to win the competition for the first time.

- In the first ever Old Firm Scottish Cup final, Rangers defeat Celtic 3–1 to win the trophy for the first time.

- Celtic win the league title for the first time.

- Celtic win the Scottish Cup for the first time after beating Queen's Park 5–1 in a replayed final.

- Dumbarton and Rangers share the inaugural Scottish league championship after both finished with 29 points.
- Heart of Midlothian win the Scottish Cup for the first time after beating Dumbarton 1–0 in the final.
1889
- Third Lanark defeat Celtic 2–1 in the Scottish Cup final replay to win the trophy for the first time.
1887
- Hibernian win the Scottish Cup for the first time after beating Dumbarton 2–1 in the final.
1885
- Renton win the Scottish Cup for the first time after beating Vale of Leven 3–1 in a replayed final.
1884
- Scotland win the inaugural British Home Championship after winning all three of their matches.
1883
- Dumbarton win the Scottish Cup for the first time after 2–1 replay win over Vale of Leven.
1877
- Vale of Leven win the Scottish Cup for the first time after beating Rangers 3–2 in a second replay - thereby becoming the first team other than Queen's Park to win the trophy.
1875
- First Edinburgh derby takes place on 25 December, Heart of Midlothian 1–0 Hibernian.
1874
- Queen's Park defeat Clydesdale 2–0 to win the inaugural Scottish Cup.
1872
- Queen's Park became the first ever Scottish football team to participate in official competition when they played in the 1871–72 FA Cup semi-final against Wanderers, the match ended goalless. Queen's, however, could not afford to extend their stay long enough for the tie to be replayed and were forced to withdraw.
- Scotland and England draw 0–0 in the first ever international football match, played at the West of Scotland Cricket Club.
1870
- First international match, between England and Scotland, finishes in a 0-0 draw at the Kennington Oval in London.
1867
- Scotland's oldest club in continuous existence and longest established club Queen's Park are established.
1827
- World's first football club is established in Scotland. Foot Ball Club of Edinburgh become the first ever registered football club in the world.
