Review

B. Fleischmann's first CD, Pop Loops for Breakfast, was Charhizma's first production. His quirky, lighthearted electronica won both many fans. On this album, a live performance from November 1999, Fleischmann takes the best from his early days and makes the worst out of it. TMP comprises two extended, untitled pieces -- 17 and 52 minutes. "Part One" is actually very good, although quite different from his previous work. More granular and noise-ridden, it slowly unfolds around a short melody and processed beat track. A bit too long, it still offers enough nice variations to make it worthwhile. In "Part Two," Fleischmann simply gets too self-indulgent. After a short abstract overture, he installs a two-chord synthesizer motif that will provide the backbone for the next 33 minutes. Textural noises come in and out of focus, overtones are added and deleted, and a melody appears here and there (variations of the same), but this chord motif and a cheap early-'80s drum machine always remain. After five minutes it sounds like the artist is sleeping on the job. At best, one could compare the piece to 1980 Tangerine Dream (or Anthony Phillips' 1984 album). At worst, one gets the feeling this is a tune from Pop Loops for Breakfast stretched over way too much time. A left turn is taken 38 minutes into the track, as it dives into more experimental, even minimalist realms, slowly desegregating to nothingness -- interesting, but too little and too late to make up for the previous half hour. ~ François Couture, All Music Guide
