Todd Carty (born 31 August, [1963]]) is an Irish actor, although in most of his roles he has played a Londoner / Southerner.
Personal life
Born in [Limerick City Ireland in 1963, he grew up in Kilburn, North London. His first television appearance in the UK was in an advertisement for Woolworths at the tender age of four. He also had other advertising roles, including one with Doctor Who actor Jon Pertwee and "The Green Cross Code""..
Carty currently lives in North London with his childhood sweetheart and business partner, actress/writer and film producer Dina Clarkin and their two sons James 11 and Thomas 7. He is a West Ham United supporter and follows the fortunes of the Republic Of Ireland International Football Team. The Irish Rugby Team and of course the Munster Rugby Team.
Acting career
He made his first stage appearance at the New London Theatre, Drury Lane as the young Lionel in Lionel Bart's autobiographical musical, "Lionel"; however, his
television career in his youth was mostly defined by his role as Tucker in the popular BBC drama,
EastEnders
Carty took over the role of Mark Fowler in EastEnders in 1990, following the departure (and later suicide) of the original actor, David Scarboro; this character was critically acclaimed as one of the first mainstream depictions of a HIV sufferer on British TV. In the year 2000, Todd was honoured with a "THIS IS YOUR LIFE" show, being surprised on the set of Eastenders by Michael Aspel with the big red book. Guests included his lady and partner actress/writer/producer Dina Clarkin, sons James and Thomas, Dina Clarkins dad, actor Tony Clarkin. Todds friends Wendy Richard,Norman Wisdom and Nick Berry and many more from past and present in an up beat emotional and fun show. During his time in Eastenders, Todd starred with his close friend Nick Berry on location in London and South Africa in the period adventure film "THE BLACK VELVET BAND". Todd decided to move on from "Eastenders" and went on to play PC Gabriel Kent in The Bill, a character whose award-winning "bad guy" persona, characterised by rapes, murders and a case of pseudo-incest, was a major departure from the "nice guy" Mark Fowler. Despite the high-profile nature of the job, it was announced in 2005 that Todd was leaving The Bill. Carty exited the series in dramatic style, with his character leaping to his death from a high rise block of flats. Since leaving The Bill, Todd returned to the big screen as the aristocrat Harvey Van Bollingbroke in the movie "THE TREASURE OF ALBION",and "THE CHARLOTTE CHURCH SHOW" in a comedy sketch in which Todd played Doctor Who. He also starred as "KING RAT" with none other than BASIL BRUSH in the popular Pantomine "DICK WHITTINGTON at "The Wycombe Swan Theatre. And after completing his latest film "THE SCHOOL THAT ROARED" as the eccentric Mr.Haig. As well as starring in the fim, Todd was invited as second unit director on "THE SCHOOL THAT ROARED" film production. Todd is presently starring in the Richard Harris murder mystery play "THE BUSINESS OF MURDER" as Police Detective Hallett. A short tour opening at The Palace Theatre Paignton. The Wyvern Theatre Swindon and completes his performances at The Capitol Theatre Horsham. Todd will once again star as "KING RAT" in a new version of the Christmas Pantomine "DICK WHITTINGTON" at "The Capitol Theatre" Horsham opening on the 13th December. Todd has been a guest star playing the role of Ray Hallam, in the christmas special of the TV series "HEARTBEAT". And Todd was also a guest star in the tv series "HOLBY CITY", as villain Cameron Cooke. Todd won "CELEBRITY MASTERMIND" choosing as his first subject, his long time friend the legendary Norman Wisdom and his 12 classic films for The Rank Organisation Pinewood Studios. Todd was also asked general knowledge questions and was quoted as really enjoying the whole experience. Todd and his long time partner and childhood sweetheart actress/writer Film Producer Dina Clarkin, mother to their two children James 11 and Thomas 7, have set up their Film Production Company, "SWORDFISH PRODUCTIONS" , and are focusing on selecting scripts for production. Both Todd and Dina are presently working on the early stages of a film written and produced by Dina Clarkin, "10 MINUTES TOO LATE", to be directed by Todd Carty. The film "THREE WISHES" also written by Dina Clarkin is another movie, amongst others, presently in the pipeline waiting for the go ahead green light. Early stages yet on "THE GRANGE HILL MOVIE" in which Todd is set to star and bring Tucker Jenkins back to life. Todd also made an appearance on the British Soap Awards presenting the Lifetime Achievement award to Wendy Richard. More recently (July 2007), Carty made his directorial debut as director of several episodes of the BBC's daytime soap opera, Doctors. And was quoted as delighted with the experience with a fantastic cast and crew and looking forward to more directing in the future, both for Television and Films. Including working on his and Dina Clarkin films for their own "SWORDFISH PRODUCTIONS".
